Tanjung Aan is the most beautiful beach in Lombok and one of the finest in Southeast Asia — a breathtaking double bay with two distinct sections of beach separated by a rocky headland, each with different sand (fine white powder sand on the west side and coarser, larger-grained pepper-corn sand on the east side). The water is an extraordinary shade of turquoise and the bay is enclosed by dramatic green headlands. The beach is largely undeveloped and has a pristine, natural character.
The headland between the two bays of Tanjung Aan is the finest viewpoint on the Lombok south coast — a dramatic rocky promontory with extraordinary views of both bays, the turquoise water, the white sand and the green hills beyond. The headland is accessible by a short walk from the beach and is the most photographed location in Lombok. The views are at their best in the morning when the light is soft and the water is at its most vivid turquoise.
Tanjung Aan is the finest swimming beach on the Lombok south coast — the bay is partially sheltered from the ocean swell and the water is calmer than the exposed surf beaches. The water is warm, clear and an extraordinary shade of turquoise. The beach is largely undeveloped with a few simple warungs selling cold drinks and fresh coconuts. The atmosphere is peaceful and natural — one of the most beautiful and relaxing beaches in Indonesia.
Gerupuk Bay is the finest surf destination on the Lombok south coast — a large, sheltered bay with multiple surf breaks accessible by boat from the Gerupuk fishing village. The breaks include Don Don (a long, fun right-hander suitable for intermediates), Inside Gerupuk (a gentler wave for beginners and intermediates) and Outside Gerupuk (a powerful break for experienced surfers). The boat trips to the breaks are operated by the local fishermen and cost approximately £5–8 per session.
Gerupuk is a traditional Sasak fishing village on the eastern shore of Gerupuk Bay — a genuine local community of fishermen who have worked the Indian Ocean for centuries, with beautiful wooden fishing boats (jukung) drawn up on the beach, a lively fish market in the early morning and a genuine local atmosphere. The village is the most authentic and characterful fishing community on the south coast and is a fascinating contrast to the tourist-oriented beaches of Kuta and Tanjung Aan.
Ekas Bay is the most remote and spectacular bay on the eastern end of the Lombok south coast — a vast, sheltered bay with a world-class right-hand surf break (the Ekas right), beautiful beaches and an extraordinary natural setting. Ekas is 30 minutes east of Gerupuk and is the most remote destination on the south coast. The Ekas Breaks Resort is the only accommodation in the area and is the best choice for surfers who want to escape the crowds of Kuta.
Bukit Merese is a dramatic hill between Kuta and Tanjung Aan — a short but steep walk to the summit rewards with extraordinary panoramic views of the south coast, including Tanjung Aan, Gerupuk Bay and the Indian Ocean. The hill is the finest viewpoint on the south coast and is particularly beautiful at sunset. The walk takes approximately 20 minutes from the base and is the most popular short hike in the Kuta area.
Tanjung Aan is 10 minutes east of Kuta Lombok by motorbike or car. Gerupuk is 15 minutes east of Kuta. A motorbike or car hire is essential. The surf boats at Gerupuk can be hired from the beach — negotiate the price before getting on the boat (approximately £5–8 per session). May to September is the best time for surfing. The beach at Tanjung Aan is best visited in the morning before the afternoon winds pick up. Bring cash, sunscreen and water.
