Majorca Holiday Guide

Majorca (Mallorca) is Spain's largest Balearic island and one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. With over 200 beaches, a stunning mountain range and a vibrant capital city, there's something for everyone.

The southwest of the island is home to the most famous resorts. Magaluf is legendary for its lively nightlife and is popular with younger holidaymakers. Palma Nova and Santa Ponsa offer a more relaxed atmosphere while still being close to the action.

The north of the island is completely different — quieter, more scenic and home to some of Majorca's most beautiful beaches. Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia are popular with families and those seeking a more tranquil holiday, with calm, shallow waters perfect for children.

Palma, the island's capital, is a world-class city with a stunning Gothic cathedral, excellent restaurants and a buzzing waterfront. It's well worth a day trip from wherever you're staying.

Travelpack and JTA Holidays both have an excellent selection of Majorca holidays, from budget apartments to 5-star beachfront resorts. We search both simultaneously to find you the best deal.

Top 8 Things To Do in Majorca

The world-class beaches, Gothic cathedral, mountain villages, underground caves and cycling routes that make Majorca the most diverse and rewarding island in the Mediterranean.

01

Palma — One of Europe's Great City Capitals

Palma is one of the finest capital cities in the Mediterranean — a world-class city with a stunning Gothic cathedral (La Seu, built over 350 years from 1229 to 1601, with extraordinary stained glass windows and a rose window 12m in diameter), the Bellver Castle (a circular Gothic castle on a hilltop with panoramic views), the Passeig des Born (Palma's elegant promenade), excellent restaurants and a buzzing waterfront. The old town (La Lonja quarter) has beautiful medieval architecture and the best tapas bars on the island.

02

Alcudia — Majorca's Best Family Beach

Alcudia in the north of Majorca is widely considered the best family resort on the island — a long, wide sandy beach with shallow, calm water ideal for young children, a well-preserved medieval walled town (one of the best in the Balearics), the Hidropark waterpark and a wide range of family-friendly hotels. The Playa de Muro (adjacent to Alcudia) is one of the most beautiful beaches in Majorca — a 6km arc of fine white sand backed by pine trees and dunes, with crystal-clear water.

03

Serra de Tramuntana — UNESCO World Heritage Mountains

The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range running along the northwest coast of Majorca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a dramatic landscape of limestone peaks (Puig Major, 1,445m, the highest point in Majorca), ancient terraced olive groves, stone villages and the most spectacular coastal scenery in the Balearics. The mountain village of Deià (home to the poet Robert Graves for 50 years) is the most beautiful village in Majorca. The road from Andratx to Pollença along the mountain coast is one of the most scenic drives in Europe.

04

Puerto Pollensa — Elegant and Tranquil

Puerto Pollensa in the north of Majorca is the most elegant and sophisticated resort on the island — a charming fishing port with a long promenade (the Passeig Voramar), excellent restaurants, a weekly market and a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. The beach is long and sandy with calm, shallow water. The nearby Cap de Formentor (a dramatic limestone peninsula with a lighthouse at the tip) is the most spectacular viewpoint in Majorca. Puerto Pollensa is the best choice for couples and those seeking a quieter, more refined holiday.

05

Caves of Drach — Underground Lake

The Caves of Drach (Coves del Drac) near Porto Cristo on the east coast are one of the most extraordinary natural attractions in the Mediterranean — a vast cave system with four interconnected caverns and Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world (177m long, 30m wide). A classical music concert is performed on boats on the lake during every visit — an extraordinary and surreal experience. The caves are 2km long and the tour takes approximately 1 hour.

06

Cycling — Majorca's World-Class Routes

Majorca is the most popular cycling destination in Europe — the island's combination of excellent roads, varied terrain (from flat coastal routes to mountain climbs), warm spring weather and good infrastructure makes it the training ground of choice for professional cycling teams (Team Sky, Movistar and many others train here in February and March). The Sa Calobra climb (9.4km at an average gradient of 7%) is one of the most famous cycling roads in the world. Cycling holidays and bike hire are available throughout the island.

07

Cala d'Or & the Southeast Coves

The southeast coast of Majorca has the most beautiful and varied collection of coves (calas) on the island — small, sheltered inlets with turquoise water and pine trees running down to the shore. Cala d'Or is the most popular resort in the southeast — a collection of small coves with excellent restaurants and a sophisticated atmosphere. Cala Mondragó (a protected natural park), Cala Figuera (a traditional fishing village with a beautiful harbour) and Es Trenc (a wild, undeveloped beach with Caribbean-quality water) are the highlights.

08

Magaluf & Palma Nova — Sun, Sea and Entertainment

Magaluf is Majorca's most famous (and most notorious) resort — a lively, entertainment-focused destination popular with younger holidaymakers, with a long sandy beach, waterpark (Western Water Park), bars, clubs and the BCM Planet Dance nightclub. Palma Nova, just along the coast, is significantly more relaxed — a family-friendly resort with a beautiful beach, good hotels and easy access to Palma (20 minutes by bus). The area has undergone significant regeneration in recent years and now has some excellent restaurants and beach clubs.
