Top 8 Things To Do in Senggigi

The extraordinary sunset views over Mount Agung, the clifftop Pura Batu Bolong temple, the Gili Islands day trips and the relaxed beachfront atmosphere that make Senggigi the most practical base in Lombok.

01

Sunsets & Mount Agung Views

Senggigi has the finest sunset views in Lombok — the town faces directly west across the Lombok Strait towards Bali, and on clear evenings the silhouette of Mount Agung (Bali's sacred 3,142-metre volcano) is visible on the horizon, creating one of the most extraordinary sunset views in Indonesia. The beach bars and restaurants along the Senggigi strip are the finest places to watch the sunset. The views are at their best from May to October when the skies are clearest.

02

Pura Batu Bolong

Pura Batu Bolong is the most beautiful and atmospheric temple in Lombok — a Hindu temple perched on a rocky outcrop jutting into the sea, just south of Senggigi town, with extraordinary views of the Lombok Strait and Mount Agung. The temple is still in active use by the Balinese Hindu community of Lombok and is open to visitors (sarong required). The sunset views from the temple are extraordinary and it is the most photographed location in Senggigi.

03

Gili Islands Day Trips

Senggigi is the most convenient base for day trips to the Gili Islands — fast boats depart from the Senggigi beach to Gili Trawangan (45 minutes), Gili Air (30 minutes) and Gili Meno (35 minutes) throughout the day. The day trips are the most popular activity from Senggigi and allow visitors to experience the Gili Islands without committing to an overnight stay. The boats are operated by several companies and can be booked through any hotel or tour operator in Senggigi.

04

Beaches

Senggigi has a series of black-sand beaches along the northwest coast — the black volcanic sand is unusual and striking, though the beaches are less pristine than the white-sand beaches of the Gili Islands or the south coast. The main Senggigi beach is pleasant and has good facilities. The beaches north of Senggigi (Mangsit, Kerandangan) are quieter and more natural. The water is warm and calm and good for swimming.

05

Restaurants & Bars

Senggigi has the best restaurant and bar scene on the Lombok mainland — a mix of Indonesian warungs, fresh seafood restaurants, international cuisine and beach bars along the main strip. The best restaurants include the Asmara Restaurant (excellent Indonesian and international food), the Square Restaurant (fine dining with sea views) and the Papaya Cafe (popular with expats and long-term visitors). The beach bars along the strip are the best places for sunset drinks.

06

Senggigi Art Market

The Senggigi Art Market is the best place in Lombok to buy traditional crafts, textiles and souvenirs — a lively market with stalls selling traditional Sasak weaving (ikat), wood carvings, silver jewellery, batik and a variety of Indonesian crafts. The market is open daily and is the most convenient shopping destination for visitors staying in Senggigi. Bargaining is expected and prices are significantly lower than in Bali.

07

Accommodation

Senggigi has the widest range of accommodation on the Lombok mainland — from budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels to the Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort (the finest hotel in the area, with a beautiful beachfront location and excellent facilities). The Sheraton is the best choice for visitors who want a comfortable, well-facilitated base on the Lombok mainland. The mid-range hotels along the strip offer good value.

08

Practical Tips

Senggigi is 30 minutes from Lombok International Airport by taxi. Fast boats to the Gili Islands depart from the Senggigi beach throughout the day. May to September is the best time to visit. The town is walkable along the main strip. Taxis and ojeks (motorcycle taxis) are the main transport for longer journeys. The Pura Batu Bolong temple is 2km south of the town centre — a pleasant walk or short taxi ride.
