Lombok is Bali's quieter, wilder and less developed neighbour — a beautiful island that offers the extraordinary natural beauty of Indonesia without the crowds, the traffic and the commercialisation of Bali. For travellers who want to see what Bali was like 20 years ago, Lombok is the answer.
Mount Rinjani (3,726m) is the centrepiece of the island — one of the most extraordinary trekking experiences in Southeast Asia. The 2–4 day trek to the summit rewards with extraordinary views over the vast caldera lake, the inner cone of Gunung Baru and across to Bali and Sumbawa. The trek is challenging but achievable for fit walkers with a guide.
The Gili Islands — three tiny car-free islands just off the north-west coast of Lombok — are the most famous attraction. Gili Trawangan is the largest and most lively, with excellent snorkelling, diving and a lively bar scene. Gili Meno is the most peaceful and romantic. Gili Air is the best balance of the two. All three have extraordinary turtle sightings — almost guaranteed when snorkelling.
Kuta Lombok, on the south coast, is a small surf town with extraordinary beaches — Mawun, Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan are among the most beautiful in Indonesia. The area is far less developed than anywhere in Bali and is excellent for surfers and travellers seeking unspoilt beaches.
The east coast has the extraordinary Tangsi Beach (Pink Beach) — one of only a handful of pink sand beaches in the world. The Sasak culture and traditional villages are fascinating and quite different from Balinese Hindu culture.

Mount Rinjani (3,726m) is one of the most extraordinary trekking experiences in Southeast Asia — a 2–4 day trek to the summit rewards with extraordinary views over the vast caldera lake, the inner cone of Gunung Baru and across to Bali and Sumbawa. One of the most dramatic volcanic landscapes in the world.
Gili Trawangan is the largest and most lively of the three Gili Islands — a car-free island with beautiful white sand beaches, turquoise water, excellent snorkelling and diving, and a lively bar and restaurant scene. The Monday and Friday night parties are legendary. Accessible by fast boat from Bali or Lombok.
Gili Meno is the smallest and most peaceful of the three Gili Islands — a tiny car-free island with beautiful beaches, excellent snorkelling (the underwater turtle statue is famous), very few tourists and a genuinely romantic atmosphere. The best choice for couples and honeymooners.
The Gili Islands have some of the best snorkelling and diving in Indonesia — extraordinary turtle sightings are almost guaranteed, the coral is excellent and the visibility is superb. The underwater statue garden off Gili Meno is one of the most photographed dive sites in Southeast Asia.
Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Kuta Bali) is a small surf town on the south coast with extraordinary beaches — Mawun, Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan are among the most beautiful in Indonesia. The surf is excellent and the area is far less developed than anywhere in Bali.
Tangsi Beach (Pink Beach) on the east coast of Lombok is one of only a handful of pink sand beaches in the world — the pink colour comes from red coral fragments mixed with white sand. The beach is remote and beautiful, accessible by boat or a rough road. The snorkelling offshore is excellent.
Lombok is home to the Sasak people, with a culture and traditions quite different from Bali. The traditional Sasak villages of Sade and Ende, with their distinctive lumbung (rice barn) architecture, are fascinating. The Sasak weaving tradition produces extraordinary textiles sold throughout the island.
Senggigi is Lombok's main beach resort area — a long stretch of beach on the west coast with a good range of hotels, restaurants and bars. Less developed than Bali's south coast but with beautiful sunsets over the Bali Strait and easy access to the Gili Islands by fast boat.
