Selong Belanak is the most beautiful beach in Lombok and one of the finest in Indonesia — a long, sweeping crescent of brilliant white sand with gentle, turquoise waves, backed by green hills and framed by dramatic headlands. The beach is 2km long and largely undeveloped, with a few simple warungs and surf schools at the western end. The waves at Selong Belanak are the gentlest on the south coast and are ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers. The beach is 25 minutes west of Kuta Lombok.
Mawun is the most perfectly sheltered bay on the Lombok south coast — a beautiful crescent of white sand enclosed by dramatic green headlands, with calm, turquoise water that is ideal for swimming. The bay is protected from the ocean swell by the headlands and has the calmest water on the south coast. The beach is largely undeveloped and has a pristine, natural character. Mawun is 20 minutes east of Kuta Lombok and is the finest swimming beach on the south coast.
The south coast of Lombok has the most dramatic and varied coastal scenery in Indonesia — a series of extraordinary bays, headlands, cliffs and turquoise lagoons stretching for 50km, with each bay separated by dramatic green headlands and each beach more beautiful than the last. The coastal road from Selong Belanak to Tanjung Aan passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in Southeast Asia. The views from the headlands between the bays are extraordinary.
The south coast road trip is the finest drive in Lombok — a spectacular route along the coast passing through Selong Belanak, Mawun, Kuta, Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk, with stops at each bay and dramatic views from the headlands between them. The drive takes a full day and is the best way to experience the extraordinary variety and beauty of the south coast. A motorbike or car hire from Kuta Lombok is essential — the road is well-maintained and the drive is straightforward.
The south coast has a series of world-class surf breaks — Selong Belanak (gentle, ideal for beginners), Mawi (powerful left-hander for experienced surfers), Are Guling (hollow right-hander), Grupuk (multiple breaks in a bay, accessible by boat) and Ekas (a remote right-hander at the eastern end of the south coast). The surf season is May to September when the swells are most consistent and the winds are offshore. Surf schools and board hire are available at Selong Belanak and Kuta.
The south coast is home to several traditional Sasak villages — the indigenous people of Lombok, with a distinct culture, language and architecture. The village of Sade (near Rembitan, 15 minutes north of Kuta) is the most accessible and well-preserved traditional Sasak village, with traditional lumbung (rice barn) architecture, traditional weaving demonstrations and a genuine community life. The village is open to visitors and is the best place to experience traditional Sasak culture.
The south coast has several traditional fishing villages — small communities of Sasak fishermen who have worked the Indian Ocean for centuries, with beautiful wooden fishing boats (jukung) drawn up on the beach and a genuine local atmosphere. The fishing village at Gerupuk is the most accessible and has a lively fish market in the early morning. The fishermen at Gerupuk also operate the surf boats that take surfers out to the Gerupuk breaks.
The south coast is best explored by motorbike or car hire from Kuta Lombok (30 minutes from Lombok Airport). The coastal road is well-maintained and the drive is straightforward. May to September is the best time to visit. The beaches are best visited in the morning before the afternoon winds pick up. Bring sunscreen, water and cash — facilities are limited outside Kuta. The surf breaks at Mawi and Are Guling are for experienced surfers only.
