Turkey invented the 'ultra all-inclusive' concept and still does it better than anywhere else in the world. The best resorts in Belek and Antalya — Rixos Premium Belek, Maxx Royal Belek, Regnum Carya, Kempinski Hotel The Dome — offer unlimited premium spirits (not just house brands), 10-15 à la carte restaurants, watersports, golf, spa treatments and nightly entertainment, all included in the room rate. The value compared to equivalent resorts in the Caribbean or Maldives is extraordinary. our travel partners has an outstanding selection of Turkish AI holidays.
Bodrum is Turkey's most glamorous resort — a whitewashed town on a peninsula between two bays, with a 15th-century Crusader castle dominating the harbour. The Bodrum Peninsula has excellent beaches (Bitez, Gümbet, Türkbükü), world-class beach clubs, excellent restaurants and the most sophisticated nightlife in Turkey. The Mandarin Oriental Bodrum and the Six Senses Kaplankaya are among the finest hotels in the country. Bodrum is also the gateway to the Turquoise Coast — gulet (traditional wooden sailing boat) cruises from Bodrum to Göcek are one of the great sailing experiences in the Mediterranean.
Ephesus (near Kusadasi) is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world — a vast Greco-Roman city of marble streets, temples, a library (the Library of Celsus, one of the most photographed ancient buildings in the world), a 25,000-seat theatre and extraordinary mosaics. At its peak, Ephesus had a population of 250,000 — the second largest city in the Roman Empire. The nearby House of the Virgin Mary (where the Virgin Mary is said to have spent her last years) is a major pilgrimage site.
Pamukkale (meaning 'cotton castle' in Turkish) is one of the most extraordinary natural landscapes in the world — a hillside of brilliant white calcium carbonate terraces (travertines) formed by hot spring water cascading down the slope, creating a series of natural pools. The terraces are UNESCO World Heritage listed. At the top of the hill, the ancient city of Hierapolis (a Greco-Roman spa city) has an extraordinary necropolis, a theatre and the Antique Pool (where you can swim among submerged Roman columns).
Cappadocia in central Turkey is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in the world — a volcanic plateau eroded into thousands of 'fairy chimney' rock formations, cave churches with Byzantine frescoes (UNESCO World Heritage), underground cities carved 8 levels deep into the rock and the most spectacular hot air balloon experience in the world. At dawn, hundreds of balloons rise over the Göreme Valley — one of the most iconic travel images in the world. Cappadocia is 1 hour by flight from Istanbul or Antalya.
Istanbul is one of the world's great cities — the only city in the world that straddles two continents (Europe and Asia), with a history spanning 2,700 years as the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The Hagia Sophia (a 6th-century cathedral turned mosque, the greatest building of the Byzantine world), the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace (the Ottoman sultans' palace for 400 years), the Grand Bazaar (one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets) and the Bosphorus cruise are the unmissable sights.
Turkish cuisine is one of the world's great food cultures — a rich tradition of grilled meats (Adana kebab, shish kebab, döner), meze (small dishes including hummus, baba ganoush, stuffed vine leaves, börek pastry), fresh fish on the Aegean coast, and extraordinary sweets (baklava, Turkish delight, künefe). Turkish breakfast (kahvaltı) is a feast — cheeses, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggs, honey and fresh bread. Turkish tea (çay) and Turkish coffee are essential parts of the culture.
A gulet cruise (Blue Voyage) along Turkey's Turquoise Coast is one of the most relaxing and beautiful holiday experiences in the Mediterranean — a traditional wooden sailing boat with 4-8 cabins, a crew of 3-4, and a week of sailing between secluded coves, ancient ruins and fishing villages. The most popular routes are Bodrum to Göcek (via Marmaris), Göcek to Olympos and Fethiye to Olympos. The water is extraordinarily clear and warm, the anchorages are beautiful and the food (cooked fresh on board) is excellent.
