The Mount Rinjani summit trek is one of the most extraordinary trekking experiences in Southeast Asia — a 2–4 day journey through tropical rainforest, open savannah, alpine meadows and volcanic moonscape to the summit at 3,726 metres. The standard 3-day/2-night trek reaches the crater rim (2,641 metres) and descends to the Segara Anak crater lake on the first day, with a summit push on the second day. The trek is challenging (steep, long days, cold nights) but achievable for fit trekkers.
The Segara Anak crater lake is one of the most beautiful and extraordinary natural features in Indonesia — a vast turquoise lake (6km wide, 230 metres deep) sitting inside the Rinjani caldera at 2,000 metres, with the active inner cone of Gunung Baru rising from the water. The lake is sacred to the Sasak and Balinese Hindu communities of Lombok and is the site of an annual pilgrimage. The views of the lake from the crater rim are extraordinary and are the highlight of the Rinjani trek.
The hot springs at the edge of the Segara Anak crater lake are one of the most extraordinary natural experiences in Indonesia — natural hot pools fed by geothermal water from the volcano, set on the shore of the crater lake with extraordinary views of Gunung Baru and the caldera walls. The hot springs are reached on the descent from the crater rim to the lake on the first day of the trek and are the most popular rest stop on the Rinjani route. Soaking in the hot springs after a long day of trekking is extraordinary.
The views from the Rinjani summit (3,726 metres) are the finest in Indonesia — on clear days, the views extend across the entire island of Lombok, across the Lombok Strait to Mount Agung in Bali, east to Sumbawa and north across the Java Sea. The sunrise from the summit is extraordinary — the shadow of the volcano stretches across the island and the colours of the sky are spectacular. The summit is reached in the early hours of the morning (2–3am departure) to arrive for sunrise.
The lower slopes of Mount Rinjani are covered in extraordinary tropical rainforest — the Rinjani National Park is one of the most biodiverse areas in Indonesia, with a variety of endemic birds (the Lombok flycatcher, the Rinjani scops owl), monkeys, deer and a rich flora. The trek through the rainforest on the first day is one of the most beautiful sections of the route. The forest is particularly beautiful in the early morning when the mist is in the trees.
There are several routes up Mount Rinjani — the most popular is the Senaru route (from the north, via the village of Senaru), which is the most scenic and gives the best views of the crater lake. The Sembalun route (from the east) is steeper and more direct and is the most popular route for the summit push. Many trekkers do a traverse — ascending via Senaru and descending via Sembalun (or vice versa). All routes require a licensed guide (mandatory in the national park).
The Rinjani Trek Centre (RTC) is the official guide organisation for Mount Rinjani — a community-based organisation that provides licensed guides, porters and equipment for the trek. All trekkers must use a licensed guide (this is mandatory in the national park). The RTC has offices in Senaru and Sembalun and can arrange all aspects of the trek including equipment hire, food and accommodation. Booking through the RTC supports the local community.
The trek is only possible during the dry season (May to October) — the mountain is closed during the wet season (November to April) due to dangerous conditions. The trek requires a reasonable level of fitness — the days are long (8–10 hours of walking) and the terrain is steep. Bring warm clothing (the summit is cold, below 5°C at night), good trekking boots, a sleeping bag and plenty of water. Book a licensed guide through the Rinjani Trek Centre in Senaru or Sembalun. The trek costs approximately £80–150 per person for a 3-day/2-night package.
