Gili Trawangan has world-class diving and snorkelling — the reefs around the Gili Islands are among the finest in Indonesia, with extraordinary coral gardens, sea turtles (almost guaranteed on every dive or snorkel), reef sharks, rays, moray eels and a vast diversity of reef fish. The most famous dive sites include Shark Point (reef sharks and turtles), Halik Reef (coral gardens) and the Japanese Wreck (a sunken ship covered in coral). The snorkelling from the beach is excellent and accessible to complete beginners.
Gili Trawangan is one of the best places in the world to see sea turtles in the wild — green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are resident around the Gili Islands and are seen on virtually every dive and snorkel. The turtles are completely unafraid of divers and snorkellers and frequently approach within touching distance (though touching is not permitted). The turtle sightings at Gili Trawangan are among the most reliable and accessible in the world.
Gili Trawangan has the most famous beach party scene in Indonesia — the island has a legendary nightlife with beach bars, fire shows, live music and parties that rotate between the main bars on a nightly basis. The main strip of bars and restaurants along the east beach is the most lively and social beach scene in Southeast Asia. The parties are particularly famous on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights when the main bars host their signature events. The atmosphere is friendly, international and extremely social.
Gili Trawangan has the widest range of accommodation of the three Gili Islands — from budget beach bungalows and backpacker hostels to boutique hotels and luxury villas. The finest hotels include the Ombak Sunset (beautiful beachfront bungalows on the quiet west side), the Desa Dunia Beda Beach Resort and the Gili Trawangan Cottages. The east beach has the most lively and social accommodation; the west and north sides are quieter and more romantic.
Gili Trawangan has beautiful white sand beaches on all sides — the east beach is the most lively and social, with beach bars, restaurants and the main party scene; the west beach is the most beautiful and romantic, with extraordinary sunset views over Mount Agung in Bali; the north beach is the quietest and most natural. The beaches are clean and well-maintained and the water is warm and clear year-round.
Gili Trawangan has the finest restaurant and bar scene of the three Gili Islands — an excellent mix of Indonesian warungs, fresh seafood restaurants, international cuisine and beach bars. The best restaurants include Scallywags (fresh seafood on the beach), Kayu Cafe (excellent Indonesian and international food) and the Exile Bar (the most atmospheric beach bar on the island). The sunset views from the west beach bars are extraordinary.
Gili Trawangan is small enough to walk or cycle around in under 2 hours — the island circumnavigation by bicycle is one of the finest and most enjoyable activities on the island, passing through the main beach strip, the quiet north and west sides, the local village and the beautiful south beach. Bicycles are available for hire from numerous shops on the island. The cidomo (horse-drawn cart) is the traditional transport on the island and is a charming way to get around.
Gili Trawangan is reached by fast boat from Bali (Padang Bai or Serangan, 1.5–2 hours) or from Lombok (Bangsal harbour, 30 minutes). There are no motorised vehicles on the island — transport is by bicycle, on foot or by cidomo. The island is small enough to walk everywhere. May to September is the best time to visit (dry season). The wet season (November to March) brings rain and rougher seas. Book accommodation in advance during peak season (July–August).
