Kuta Lombok is one of the finest surf destinations in Southeast Asia — the south coast has a series of world-class surf breaks within easy reach of the town, including Gerupuk (a bay with multiple breaks suitable for all levels, accessible by boat), Mawi (a powerful left-hander for experienced surfers), Selong Belanak (a long, gentle wave ideal for beginners and intermediates) and Are Guling (a hollow right-hander). The surf season is May to September when the swells are most consistent and the winds are offshore.
The south coast of Lombok around Kuta has the most dramatic and varied coastal scenery in Indonesia — a series of extraordinary bays, headlands, white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons backed by green hills, with a wild and largely undeveloped character. The coastal road from Kuta east to Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in Southeast Asia. The views from the headlands between the bays are extraordinary.
Kuta Lombok has beautiful white-sand beaches — the main Kuta beach is pleasant and has good facilities, but the finest beaches are a short drive away: Selong Belanak (the most beautiful beach in Lombok, a long crescent of white sand with gentle waves), Mawun (a perfectly sheltered bay with calm, turquoise water) and Tanjung Aan (a double bay with extraordinary white sand and turquoise water). All are within 20 minutes of Kuta town.
The Novotel Lombok Resort is the finest hotel in the Kuta area — a beautiful beachfront resort with 101 rooms and villas, a private beach, a pool, an excellent restaurant and extraordinary views of the south coast. The resort is set on a private beach just east of Kuta town and is the best choice for visitors who want a comfortable, well-facilitated base in the south of Lombok. The resort is significantly more affordable than comparable Bali hotels.
The south coast of Lombok has good snorkelling and diving — the reefs around Gerupuk Bay and the offshore islands have a diverse marine life with reef fish, rays and occasional sea turtles. The snorkelling is accessible by boat from Kuta and is a pleasant complement to the surfing and beach activities. The diving is less spectacular than the Gili Islands but the south coast reefs are less crowded and have a more natural character.
Kuta Lombok has a rapidly growing restaurant and cafe scene — a mix of Indonesian warungs, surf cafes, international restaurants and beach bars that has developed significantly in recent years. The best restaurants include the Ashtari Restaurant (the most atmospheric in Kuta, with extraordinary views from a hilltop terrace), the Warung Turtle (excellent Indonesian food) and the El Bazar Cafe (popular with surfers). The restaurant scene is less developed than Bali but is improving rapidly.
The south coast road trip from Kuta is the finest drive in Lombok — a spectacular route along the coast passing through a series of extraordinary bays, beaches and headlands, with stops at Selong Belanak, Mawun, Tanjung Aan, Gerupuk and the traditional Sasak village of Sade. The drive takes a full day and is the best way to experience the extraordinary variety and beauty of the Lombok south coast. A motorbike or car hire is essential.
Kuta Lombok is 30 minutes from Lombok International Airport by taxi — the most convenient south coast destination from the airport. A motorbike or car hire is essential for exploring the south coast. May to September is the best time for surfing. The surf breaks at Gerupuk are accessible by boat (hire from the beach). The Novotel should be booked in advance during peak season. The town has good ATMs and a reasonable range of shops.
