Gili Meno has the finest sea turtle sightings in Indonesia — the island has a sea turtle sanctuary (the Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary) where injured and juvenile turtles are rehabilitated before being released into the wild. The turtles are seen on virtually every snorkel and dive around the island, and the sanctuary allows visitors to see the turtles up close in their rehabilitation pools. The turtle sightings at Gili Meno are the most reliable and numerous of the three Gili Islands.
The Nest is one of the most extraordinary underwater attractions in Southeast Asia — a collection of human figures cast in concrete and covered in coral, placed on the seabed around Gili Meno at a depth of 8–10 metres. The sculptures have been colonised by coral and marine life over the years and are now extraordinary underwater artworks. The Nest is accessible to snorkellers (the figures are visible from the surface) and is the most unique diving and snorkelling experience in the Gili Islands.
Gili Meno is the most romantic island in Indonesia and one of the finest honeymoon destinations in Southeast Asia — the tiny, tranquil island has a genuinely magical atmosphere, with pristine beaches, crystal-clear water, extraordinary sunsets and a complete absence of the party scene that characterises Gili Trawangan. The island has several beautiful boutique hotels and villas designed specifically for couples. The combination of seclusion, natural beauty and excellent snorkelling makes it the perfect honeymoon island.
Gili Meno has a small but excellent selection of accommodation — from simple beach bungalows to beautiful boutique hotels and private villas. The finest hotels include the Mahamaya Boutique Resort (the most romantic hotel on the island, with beautiful beachfront bungalows and an excellent restaurant), the Shack Gili Meno (popular with couples) and the Sunset Gecko (simple, characterful bungalows on the west beach). The accommodation is more limited than Gili Trawangan but the quality is excellent.
Gili Meno has the most pristine and uncrowded beaches of the three Gili Islands — the beaches are clean, white and largely deserted, with warm, clear water and a genuinely natural and unspoilt character. The west beach has the finest sunset views (looking towards Bali and Mount Agung) and is the most romantic beach on the island. The north beach has the best snorkelling. The east beach is the most accessible and has the main accommodation strip.
Gili Meno has a small saltwater lake in the centre of the island — the Gili Meno Bird Lake — which is home to a variety of wading birds and is the most natural and peaceful spot on the island. The lake is surrounded by mangroves and is accessible by a short walk from the beach. The birdwatching at the lake is the best on the Gili Islands and is a pleasant complement to the beach and snorkelling activities.
Gili Meno has the finest sunsets of the three Gili Islands — the island faces directly west towards Bali and the sunset views over the Lombok Strait, with Mount Agung (Bali's sacred volcano) silhouetted on the horizon, are extraordinary. The west beach is the finest place to watch the sunset on the island and the views are among the most beautiful in Indonesia. The sunset from the Mahamaya Resort terrace is particularly spectacular.
Gili Meno is reached by fast boat from Bali (1.5–2 hours) or from Lombok (Bangsal harbour, 25 minutes). There are no motorised vehicles on the island. The island is very small — you can walk around it in 30 minutes. Facilities are limited compared to Gili Trawangan — bring cash (ATMs are unreliable), sunscreen and any medications you need. May to September is the best time to visit. Book accommodation well in advance — the island has limited rooms and fills quickly during peak season.
