Top 8 Things To Do in Petitenget Temple & Rice Fields

The ancient sea temple, the last rice fields of Seminyak, the extraordinary contrast with the resort area and the most authentic spiritual and natural experience in the Seminyak area.

01

Pura Petitenget

Pura Petitenget is one of the most important sea temples in Bali — a beautiful and atmospheric Hindu temple on the headland above Petitenget Beach, with extraordinary views of the Indian Ocean and the Seminyak coastline. The temple is one of a chain of six key sea temples around the Balinese coast (the Sad Kahyangan Jagat) and is still in active use by the local community. The temple is open to respectful visitors (sarong required) and is the most atmospheric temple in the Seminyak area.

02

Rice Fields

The rice fields behind Pura Petitenget are the last remaining agricultural land in the Seminyak area — a beautiful and increasingly rare landscape of emerald green rice paddies, traditional irrigation channels and coconut palms, surrounded by the villas and restaurants of the resort area. The rice fields are a remarkable contrast to the commercial environment of Seminyak and offer a glimpse of the traditional Balinese agricultural landscape that once covered the entire area.

03

Rice Paddy Walks

The rice fields around Pura Petitenget offer beautiful short walks — a network of narrow paths through the paddies, past traditional irrigation channels and through coconut groves. The walks are the most peaceful and authentic experience in the Seminyak area and are largely free of tourists. The best walks start from the temple and wind through the paddies towards the Canggu area. The walks are best in the early morning before the heat of the day.

04

Temple Ceremonies

Pura Petitenget holds regular temple ceremonies throughout the year — the Balinese Hindu calendar is full of ceremonies and festivals, and the temple hosts several major ceremonies each year. The ceremonies are open to respectful visitors and are the most authentic cultural experience in the Seminyak area. The most spectacular ceremonies involve elaborate offerings, gamelan music, traditional dance and colourful processions. The Odalan (temple anniversary) ceremony is the most important and spectacular.

05

Sunset Views

The headland above Pura Petitenget has some of the finest sunset views in Seminyak — the temple sits on a rocky promontory above the beach with unobstructed views of the Indian Ocean to the west. The sunset from the temple headland is extraordinary and is one of the finest sunset viewpoints in the Seminyak area. The temple is particularly beautiful at sunset when the light turns golden and the ocean glows. Arrive by 5:30pm to find a good spot.

06

Petitenget Beach

Petitenget Beach, below the temple, is a quieter and less crowded section of the Seminyak beachfront — a beautiful stretch of dark volcanic sand with fewer beach clubs and a more local, authentic atmosphere. The beach is popular with surfers and is the best spot for a quiet sunset walk away from the crowds of the main Seminyak beach clubs. The beach is accessible from the temple headland via a short path.

07

Luxury Villas

The area around Pura Petitenget and the rice fields has the finest luxury villa accommodation in Seminyak — the neighbourhood has a high concentration of private villas with pools, many of which have views of the rice fields or the temple. Staying in a villa with a rice field view in the Petitenget area is the most peaceful and authentic way to experience Seminyak. The villas are generally quieter and more private than the hotels of central Seminyak.

08

Practical Tips

Pura Petitenget is on Jalan Petitenget, approximately 35 minutes from the airport by taxi. The temple is open to visitors daily from approximately 8am to 6pm. A sarong is required to enter the temple — sarongs are available for hire at the entrance. The rice field walks start from the temple and are best in the early morning (6–9am). The temple is at its most atmospheric during ceremonies — ask at your hotel for the schedule. Photography is permitted outside the inner temple.
