Kuta is where Bali tourism began — a long stretch of golden sand, consistent surf breaks, a legendary sunset strip and the most vibrant nightlife on the island. It is the most accessible, most affordable and most energetic resort in Bali.
The beach is excellent for surfing — consistent waves ideal for beginners and intermediates, with dozens of surf schools and board rental shops. The sunsets are extraordinary — Kuta faces due west and the sky turns spectacular shades of orange and pink every evening.
Waterbom Bali (voted the best water park in Asia) is in the heart of Kuta. The Beachwalk Shopping Centre (right on the beach) has international brands and excellent restaurants. The Legian Street nightlife strip is the most vibrant in Bali.
Kuta is 15 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport — the most convenient location on the island. Seminyak (more upscale, better restaurants) is a 15-minute walk north. Canggu (surf, cafes, digital nomads) is 30 minutes north.
The best time to visit is April to October — the dry season, with sunshine and calm seas. November to March is the wet season — hot and humid with heavy afternoon rain, but still warm enough to surf and swim. Kuta Beach is where surfing came to Bali — a long, gently curving beach with consistent waves that are ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. The beach is lined with surf schools, board rental shops and warung (local food stalls). The waves are best from April to October. The sunsets over the Indian Ocean from Kuta Beach are among the most spectacular in Bali.
Kuta faces due west and has the finest sunsets in Bali — the sky turns extraordinary shades of orange, pink and purple as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean. The beach fills with locals and tourists every evening to watch the spectacle. The beach bars and warungs along the strip serve cold Bintang beer and fresh coconuts at sunset.
Waterbom Bali is the finest water park in Asia — a 3.8-hectare tropical water park in the heart of Kuta with 16 slides, a lazy river, a swim-up bar and excellent restaurants. Voted the best water park in Asia by TripAdvisor for multiple consecutive years. The Climax (the steepest slide in Asia) and the Python (a 360-degree loop) are unmissable.
Kuta has the most vibrant nightlife in Bali — the legendary Sky Garden (a six-storey nightclub on Legian Street with different music on each floor), the Bounty (a ship-shaped nightclub), the Hard Rock Cafe and dozens of beach bars and clubs. The Legian Street strip comes alive after dark with live music, fire dancers and the best people-watching in Bali.
Kuta has the best shopping in Bali for mainstream brands and souvenirs — Kuta Square (a large open-air shopping centre with international brands and local boutiques), the Beachwalk Shopping Centre (Bali's most modern mall, right on the beach, with H&M, Zara and excellent restaurants) and the street stalls of Legian Street (for bargain batik, sarongs and souvenirs).
Legian Street has the most diverse dining scene in Kuta — from excellent local warungs serving nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles) and satay for under £2, to international restaurants serving pizza, pasta, sushi and burgers. The Poppies Lane restaurants are a Kuta institution. The night market at Kuta Square is excellent for cheap, authentic Balinese food.
Pura Petitenget is one of the most important sea temples in Bali — a beautiful temple on the beach at the northern end of Kuta/Seminyak, believed to protect the island from evil spirits. The temple is particularly atmospheric at sunset, when the priests perform ceremonies and the sky turns golden. Visitors must wear a sarong (available to borrow at the entrance).
Kuta is the best-located resort in Bali for day trips — Ubud (the cultural heart of Bali, 1.5 hours), the Uluwatu Temple and Kecak fire dance (45 minutes), the Tanah Lot sea temple (45 minutes), the Tegallalang rice terraces (2 hours) and the Nusa Penida island (2 hours by fast boat from Sanur) are all easily accessible.
