Canggu is the most fashionable and fastest-growing area in Bali — a laid-back neighbourhood of surf breaks, rice paddy cafes, rooftop bars and yoga studios that has become the digital nomad capital of Asia. More relaxed than Seminyak, more accessible than Ubud, Canggu is the perfect base for travellers who want the best of modern Bali.
The surf is excellent — Echo Beach (a powerful reef break) and Batu Bolong (a more accessible beach break) are both world-class. The cafe scene is extraordinary — dozens of Instagram-famous cafes set among the rice paddies with fast WiFi and excellent food.
The Lawn beach club has the finest sunsets in Canggu. Old Man's bar has live music every night and the most social atmosphere in Bali. The food scene is the most creative on the island — from local warungs to world-class restaurants.
Tanah Lot temple (20 minutes) is the most photographed sight in Bali. Seminyak (15 minutes south) has the finest beach clubs and restaurants. Ubud (1.5 hours) is the cultural heart of the island.
The best time to visit is April to October — the dry season, with sunshine and consistent surf. November to March is the wet season — still warm and surfable, but with heavy afternoon rain. Canggu has the finest surf in the Bali mainland — Echo Beach (a powerful left-hand reef break, best for intermediate to advanced surfers), Batu Bolong (a more accessible beach break, good for all levels) and Berawa Beach (a long beach with consistent waves). The surf is best from April to October. The beach bars at Echo Beach serve cold Bintang and fresh coconuts while you watch the surfers.
Canggu has the most extraordinary cafe scene in Bali — dozens of Instagram-famous cafes set among the rice paddies, with fast WiFi, excellent coffee, healthy food and extraordinary views of the green terraces. Satu-Satu, Betelnut, The Shady Shack, Crate Cafe and Nude are among the finest. Canggu is the digital nomad capital of Asia — co-working spaces are excellent.
The Lawn is the finest beach club in Canggu — a beautiful lawn overlooking the Indian Ocean, with sun loungers, a pool, excellent cocktails and extraordinary sunsets. Finn's Beach Club (the largest beach club in Bali), Old Man's (the most popular bar in Canggu, with live music every night) and the rooftop bars of the Batu Bolong area are all unmissable.
Canggu is the wellness capital of Bali — dozens of yoga studios, meditation centres, sound healing sessions, Balinese spa treatments and healthy food cafes. The Desa Seni eco-resort has the finest yoga programme on the island. Serenity Eco Guesthouse, Radiantly Alive and The Practice are among the best studios. The wellness scene is extraordinary.
Canggu has the most diverse and creative food scene in Bali — from excellent local warungs serving nasi goreng and satay for under £2, to world-class restaurants serving raw vegan food, Japanese fusion, Mexican tacos and wood-fired pizza. Naughty Nuri's (the most famous ribs in Bali), Warung Dandelion, Monsieur Spoon (the finest bakery in Bali) and Crate Cafe are unmissable.
Old Man's is the most famous bar in Canggu — a large, open-air beach bar on Batu Bolong Beach with live music every night, excellent cocktails and the most social atmosphere in Bali. The Sunday sessions are legendary. The surrounding streets have excellent bars, clubs and live music venues. Canggu's nightlife is more relaxed and creative than Kuta's.
Tanah Lot, 20 minutes from Canggu, is the most photographed temple in Bali — a 16th-century Hindu sea temple perched on a dramatic rock formation in the Indian Ocean, accessible on foot at low tide. The sunset views from the clifftop above the temple are extraordinary. One of the most iconic images in Bali and an unmissable day trip from Canggu.
Canggu has the most creative shopping scene in Bali — the Canggu Community Market (every Saturday, with local designers, street food and live music), the boutiques of Batu Bolong Street (for Balinese fashion, jewellery and homewares), the vintage shops of Berawa and the surf shops of Echo Beach. Far more interesting than the tourist shops of Kuta.
