Phuket is Thailand's most popular beach destination and the country's largest island — a place that has grown from a quiet backpacker stop into one of Southeast Asia's premier resort destinations without losing its essential Thai character.
The island divides naturally into several distinct beach areas, each with its own character. Patong is the most developed and lively — a long crescent of golden sand backed by hotels, restaurants and the famous Bangla Road nightlife strip. It is busy, vibrant and excellent for those who want a lively holiday. Kata and Karon, a short drive south, are calmer and more family-friendly, with excellent swimming and a more relaxed atmosphere. Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao on the west coast are quieter and more upmarket, with some of the finest luxury resorts in Southeast Asia. Rawai and Nai Harn in the south are the most local and least touristy.
Phuket is also the gateway to some of the most extraordinary day trips in Thailand. The Phi Phi Islands, a 45-minute speedboat ride away, are among the most beautiful in the world — Maya Bay, where The Beach was filmed, is extraordinary. Phang Nga Bay, with its limestone karst towers rising from jade-green water, is one of the most iconic landscapes in Thailand. James Bond Island, sea caves and floating villages are all accessible on day trips.
The diving is world-class. The Similan Islands, a UNESCO-protected marine park, have extraordinary coral, whale sharks, manta rays and exceptional visibility. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are among the best dive sites in Southeast Asia.
Old Phuket Town is a UNESCO-listed area of Sino-Portuguese architecture that is well worth a half-day visit — colourful shophouses, excellent cafes and the Sunday Walking Street market are all highlights.
The best time to visit is November to April — dry, sunny and with calm seas. May to October is the wet season, with more rain and rougher seas, but resorts offer significant discounts. We search across Travelpack, Emirates Holidays and JTA Holidays for the best deals, with the FIBI discount applied automatically.
