Koh Samui is the Gulf of Thailand's most popular island — a destination that has grown from a coconut plantation into one of Southeast Asia's premier beach resort destinations while retaining much of its tropical charm.
The island has several distinct beach areas, each with its own character. Chaweng on the east coast is the most developed and lively — a long, wide beach with excellent swimming, beach bars, water sports and a vibrant nightlife strip. It is the most popular area with British tourists and has the widest range of accommodation, from budget guesthouses to five-star resorts. Lamai, just south of Chaweng, is quieter and more local. Bophut on the north coast has the charming Fisherman's Village — a row of restored Chinese shophouses with excellent restaurants and boutique shops. Maenam is the most peaceful and family-friendly. Choeng Mon in the northeast is quiet and upmarket.
Koh Samui has some of the finest luxury resorts in Thailand. The Four Seasons, Conrad, Anantara and Six Senses all have exceptional properties on the island, with private pool villas and direct beach access at prices that would be extraordinary in Europe.
The island is also the gateway to some of the best experiences in the Gulf of Thailand. The Full Moon Party on nearby Koh Phangan — a monthly beach party attended by thousands — is a 30-minute ferry ride away. Ang Thong Marine National Park, an archipelago of 42 islands with emerald lagoons and extraordinary snorkelling, is accessible on day trips. Koh Tao, one of the world's best places to learn to dive, is 90 minutes away by ferry.
The best time to visit is December to August — the Gulf of Thailand coast is drier and calmer than the Andaman coast during this period. October and November can bring heavy rain.
