Top 8 Things To Do in Kata & Karon

The beautiful beaches, surf and relaxed atmosphere that make Kata and Karon the finest family areas in Phuket.

01

Kata Beach

Kata Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket — a wide, curved bay with golden sand, clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. The beach is excellent for swimming from November to April. From May to October, the surf picks up and Kata becomes one of the best beginner surf spots in Thailand. The beach is popular with families and couples and has a good range of beach bars and restaurants.

02

Surfing at Kata

Kata Beach is the best surf spot in Phuket — consistent waves from May to October make it ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Several surf schools operate on the beach and board hire is available. The surf is not powerful enough to be dangerous for beginners, making it one of the most accessible surf experiences in Southeast Asia.

03

Karon Beach

Karon Beach is the longest beach south of Patong — a wide, 3km stretch of white sand with calm water ideal for swimming. The beach is less developed than Kata and has a more spacious, uncrowded feel. The southern end of Karon merges with Kata, making it easy to walk between the two beaches. The Karon night market is excellent for street food and souvenirs.

04

Kata Noi

Kata Noi (Little Kata) is the most beautiful small beach in the Kata area — a sheltered cove just south of Kata Beach with crystal-clear water, fine white sand and a more exclusive atmosphere. The Katathani Phuket Beach Resort occupies most of the beachfront and is one of the finest resorts in Phuket. The beach is quieter and more beautiful than the main Kata Beach.

05

Kata Hill Viewpoint

The Kata Hill viewpoint (between Kata and Karon) is one of the finest viewpoints in Phuket — a spectacular panoramic view of Kata Beach, Kata Noi and Karon Beach from a single vantage point. The viewpoint is accessible by motorbike or taxi and is particularly beautiful at sunset. It is one of the most photographed spots in Phuket.

06

Boat Trips

Kata and Karon are excellent bases for boat trips — day trips to Phi Phi Island, Racha Island (excellent snorkelling) and James Bond Island depart from nearby piers. Racha Island (30 minutes by speedboat) has some of the finest snorkelling in Phuket and is easily accessible from Kata and Karon.

07

Restaurants

Kata and Karon have an excellent selection of restaurants — Thai, seafood, Italian and international cuisine is available throughout both areas. The beachfront restaurants at Kata are excellent for fresh seafood. The Karon night market (held several evenings a week) is the best place for authentic Thai street food at very low prices.

08

Shopping & Nightlife

Kata and Karon have a modest but enjoyable shopping and nightlife scene — several bars, live music venues and souvenir shops are located in both areas. The nightlife is far more relaxed than Patong. For serious shopping and nightlife, Patong is just 15 minutes away by songthaew.
