Top 8 Things To Do in Old Phuket Town

The Sino-Portuguese architecture, street food and creative energy that make Old Phuket Town the most fascinating and rewarding area on the island.

01

Sino-Portuguese Architecture

Old Phuket Town has the finest Sino-Portuguese architecture in Thailand — a remarkable collection of 19th and early 20th century shophouses built by Chinese tin merchants in a hybrid Chinese-European style. Thalang Road, Dibuk Road and Phang Nga Road are the finest streets. The buildings are beautifully preserved and painted in vivid colours. The architecture is unique in Southeast Asia.

02

Street Art

Old Phuket Town has the most vibrant street art scene in Thailand — a collection of murals, installations and sculptures by local and international artists throughout the old town streets. The street art trail is one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the old town and the quality of the work is extraordinary. New pieces are added regularly.

03

Sunday Walking Street

The Sunday Walking Street market on Thalang Road is the best market in Phuket — a lively night market with excellent street food, handicrafts, clothing, art and live music. The market runs every Sunday evening from around 4pm and is one of the most enjoyable experiences in Phuket. The atmosphere is wonderful and the food is exceptional.

04

Street Food & Restaurants

Old Phuket Town has the best street food in Phuket — a wide range of authentic Thai, Chinese-Thai and Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya) dishes available from street stalls, coffee shops and restaurants throughout the old town. The Kopitiam by Wilai and the China Inn Cafe are among the finest. The food is significantly better and more authentic than in the beach resort areas.

05

Boutique Hotels

Old Phuket Town has the most characterful boutique hotels in Phuket — several heritage shophouses have been converted into excellent boutique hotels. The Rommanee Classic Guesthouse, the Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel and the Phuket 346 are all exceptional. Staying in the old town is the most authentic and interesting accommodation experience in Phuket.

06

Chinese Shrines

Old Phuket Town has several important Chinese shrines — the Jui Tui Shrine (the most important, dedicated to the Vegetarian Festival), the Put Jaw Shrine and the Bang Niew Shrine are all fascinating. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival (October) is centred on these shrines and is one of the most extraordinary cultural events in Thailand.

07

Phuket Vegetarian Festival

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival (held in October) is the most extraordinary cultural event in Thailand — a nine-day festival of Chinese Taoist rituals, street processions and extreme acts of devotion (including firewalking and body piercing). The festival is centred on Old Phuket Town and is one of the most remarkable spectacles in Southeast Asia.

08

Location

Old Phuket Town is centrally located on the island — approximately 30 minutes from Patong, 20 minutes from Kata and Karon, and 45 minutes from Surin and Bang Tao. It is an essential half-day or full-day excursion from any beach resort on the island. The town is best explored on foot.
