Kamala Beach is a beautiful, quiet bay on the west coast of Phuket — a wide, curved beach with golden sand and calm water, framed by rocky headlands at each end. The beach is far less crowded than Patong and has a genuinely relaxed atmosphere. The water is excellent for swimming from November to April and the beach is rarely busy even at peak season.
Phuket FantaSea is the most spectacular cultural show in Thailand — a Las Vegas-style extravaganza combining Thai mythology, acrobatics, elephants, fireworks and special effects in a purpose-built theatre. The show runs every evening (except Tuesday) and is one of the most popular attractions in Phuket. The complex also has a large buffet restaurant and a shopping village.
Kamala has some of the finest boutique resorts in Phuket — the Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort, the Keemala (one of the most extraordinary luxury resorts in Thailand, with tree house pool villas in the jungle above the beach) and the Andara Resort & Villas are all exceptional. The quality and seclusion is extraordinary.
Kamala village is one of the most genuine Thai fishing villages in Phuket — a real local community with a mosque (Kamala has a significant Muslim population), a morning market, local restaurants and a way of life largely unchanged by tourism. The village is a fascinating contrast to the resort areas and is excellent for an authentic Thai experience.
Kamala has some of the most beautiful scenery on Phuket's west coast — rocky headlands at each end of the bay, lush green hills behind the beach and clear blue water. The headland walk from Kamala to Surin (30 minutes) passes through beautiful coastal scenery and offers excellent views of both bays.
Kamala has the most relaxed and authentic atmosphere of any beach between Patong and Surin — a genuine local community with a small number of excellent resorts and restaurants. The evenings are quiet and peaceful. Patong is just 10 minutes away for those who want nightlife and entertainment.
Boat trips to Phi Phi Island, James Bond Island and Racha Island depart from nearby piers. The Kamala beach is also excellent for kayaking and paddleboarding. Several water sports operators are based on the beach.
Kamala has a small but excellent selection of restaurants — the resort restaurants (particularly at the Hyatt and Keemala) are among the finest in Phuket, and the local village restaurants serve excellent authentic Thai food at very low prices. The beachfront restaurants are excellent for fresh seafood.
