Top 8 Things To Do in Le Morne

The dramatic mountain, world-class kitesurfing and ultra-luxury that make Le Morne the most spectacular destination in Mauritius.

01

Le Morne Brabant — UNESCO World Heritage

Le Morne Brabant is a dramatic basalt monolith rising 556 metres from the southwest tip of Mauritius — a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its historical significance as a refuge for escaped slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. The mountain is the most iconic landmark in Mauritius and can be climbed with a guide (approximately 3 hours return).

02

World-Class Kitesurfing & Windsurfing

Le Morne is one of the finest kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations in the world — the consistent trade winds, the shallow lagoon and the extraordinary natural setting make it a mecca for wind sports enthusiasts. The IKO World Kiteboarding Championship has been held here. The conditions are suitable for all levels.

03

The Lagoon

The lagoon at Le Morne is the most beautiful in Mauritius — a vast, shallow expanse of turquoise water protected by the outer reef, with extraordinary clarity and the dramatic backdrop of Le Morne Brabant mountain. The lagoon is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding.

04

Underwater Waterfall Illusion

The most photographed natural phenomenon in Mauritius is the "underwater waterfall" illusion off Le Morne — sand and silt on the ocean floor create the appearance of a waterfall cascading into the deep ocean. The illusion is best seen from the air (helicopter tours are available) and is one of the most extraordinary natural sights in the Indian Ocean.

05

Lux* Le Morne

The Lux* Le Morne is one of the most stylish and contemporary resorts in Mauritius — a beautiful property at the foot of Le Morne Brabant with exceptional beaches, overwater villas, world-class dining and a vibrant, design-led atmosphere. It is the finest resort in the Le Morne area.

06

Diving & Snorkelling

The reefs off Le Morne are excellent for diving and snorkelling — the outer reef has extraordinary coral formations and abundant marine life. The dive centres offer guided dives on the nearby sites, including the famous Shark Point where grey reef sharks and nurse sharks are regularly encountered.

07

Boat Trips & Fishing

Le Morne is an excellent base for boat trips — catamaran excursions to the offshore reefs and sandbanks, deep-sea fishing (Mauritius is one of the world's premier big game fishing destinations, with marlin, tuna and wahoo) and sunset cruises. The fishing grounds off the southwest coast are among the most productive in the Indian Ocean.

08

Resort Dining

The resorts of Le Morne offer exceptional dining — the Lux* Le Morne has multiple restaurants with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a vibrant, contemporary atmosphere. The sunset dining experiences at Le Morne, with the mountain as a backdrop, are among the most memorable in Mauritius.
