Grand Baie is the departure point for the most popular excursion in Mauritius — catamaran day trips to the offshore islands, including Île Plate, Coin de Mire and Gabriel Island. The trips include snorkelling, a barbecue lunch on a sandbank and swimming in crystal-clear water. They are the highlight of most visitors' Mauritius holiday.
Grand Baie is the water sports hub of Mauritius — every type of water sport is available, from jet skiing and parasailing to windsurfing, kitesurfing and deep-sea fishing. The bay is protected and calm, making it ideal for beginners. The dive centres offer PADI courses and guided dives on the excellent reefs nearby.
Grand Baie has the best nightlife and restaurant scene in Mauritius — a wide range of restaurants serving Mauritian Creole cuisine, Indian, Chinese, French and international food, plus bars, beach clubs and nightclubs. The La Croisette shopping centre and the waterfront are the social hubs of the town.
Grand Baie has the best shopping in Mauritius outside Port Louis — boutiques, craft markets, jewellery shops and the La Croisette shopping centre. The local craft market sells Mauritian handicrafts, textiles and souvenirs. The duty-free shopping for electronics, perfume and alcohol is excellent.
Grand Baie beach is a beautiful, sheltered bay with calm, clear water — ideal for swimming and water sports. The beach is lined with restaurants and beach bars. The nearby beaches of Pereybere and Cap Malheureux (with its famous red-roofed church) are within easy reach and are excellent alternatives.
Dolphin watching excursions from Grand Baie are excellent — spinner dolphins are frequently seen in the waters off the north coast of Mauritius. Early morning boat trips offer the best chance of encounters. Swimming with dolphins is also possible on some excursions.
The offshore islands visible from Grand Baie — Île Plate and Coin de Mire — are accessible by boat and offer excellent snorkelling, beautiful beaches and extraordinary views back to the main island. Coin de Mire (Gunner's Quoin) is a dramatic volcanic rock rising from the sea and is a protected nature reserve.
Grand Baie has the finest selection of restaurants in Mauritius — from upmarket French-Creole restaurants to local dholl puri stalls. The Mauritian cuisine is extraordinary — a fusion of African, Indian, Chinese and French influences. The fresh seafood, curries and street food are all excellent.
