Blue Bay Marine Park is the finest snorkelling destination in Mauritius — a protected marine area with extraordinary coral gardens, sea turtles, rays, parrotfish, angelfish and hundreds of species of tropical fish. The coral coverage is exceptional and the water clarity is outstanding. Glass-bottom boat trips are available for non-snorkellers.
Blue Bay beach is one of the most beautiful on the southeast coast of Mauritius — a wide, sheltered bay with calm, exceptionally clear water and fine white sand. The beach is less developed than the north coast resorts and has a more natural, relaxed character. The water is shallow and calm, ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
Île aux Aigrettes, a small coral island just offshore from Blue Bay, is a nature reserve managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation — a restoration project recreating the original ecosystem of Mauritius before human settlement. The island is home to giant Aldabra tortoises, pink pigeons and the rare Mauritius fody. Guided tours are available by boat.
Mahebourg, 5 minutes from Blue Bay, is the most charming town in Mauritius — a historic waterfront town with a beautiful promenade, a fascinating historical museum (covering the 1810 Battle of Grand Port), excellent local restaurants and a vibrant weekly market. It is the most authentic town in Mauritius.
Blue Bay is just 10 minutes from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport — the most convenient location in Mauritius for late arrivals and early departures. It is an excellent choice for visitors who want to maximise their time on the island without a long transfer.
Blue Bay is an excellent base for exploring the south of Mauritius — the most dramatic and least-visited part of the island. The Gris Gris cliffs, Rochester Falls, the Chamarel Coloured Earth and the Black River Gorges National Park are all within easy reach. The south coast has a wilder, more authentic character than the tourist-heavy north.
Blue Bay has excellent water sports — kayaking, paddleboarding and glass-bottom boat trips are all available. The Marine Park is a protected area, so motorised water sports are restricted, which helps preserve the extraordinary coral and marine life. The snorkelling is the main attraction.
Blue Bay and Mahebourg have excellent local restaurants — small, family-run establishments serving authentic Mauritian Creole cuisine, Indian curries, Chinese food and fresh seafood at very reasonable prices. The Mahebourg market (Monday mornings) is one of the finest food markets in Mauritius.
