Top 8 Things To Do in Khao Takiab

The golden Buddha, the monkey temple, the dramatic headland views and the finest seafood restaurants that make Khao Takiab the most scenic and characterful part of Hua Hin.

01

The Hill & Buddha

Khao Takiab (Chopstick Mountain) is a dramatic rocky headland rising steeply from the southern end of Hua Hin Beach — the hill is topped by a large golden Buddha statue visible from the beach and a small Buddhist temple. The climb to the top takes approximately 20 minutes and passes through a forest inhabited by a large troop of macaque monkeys. The views from the top over Hua Hin Beach and the Gulf of Thailand are extraordinary.

02

Monkey Temple

The monkey temple at the top of Khao Takiab is one of the most atmospheric and entertaining attractions in Hua Hin — a small Buddhist temple surrounded by a large troop of resident macaque monkeys that are completely habituated to humans. The monkeys are bold and entertaining but should be treated with respect — do not bring food and keep bags closed. The temple itself is beautiful and the views from the hilltop are the finest in the Hua Hin area.

03

Khao Takiab Beach

The beach on the southern side of Khao Takiab is quieter and more local than the main Hua Hin Beach — a pleasant stretch of sand with fewer tourists, more local Thai families and a more relaxed atmosphere. The beach is backed by a string of excellent fresh seafood restaurants and is particularly popular with local Thais at weekends. The water is calm and warm and the beach is a good alternative to the busier main beach.

04

Seafood Restaurants

Khao Takiab has the finest fresh seafood restaurants in Hua Hin — a string of excellent open-air restaurants along the beachfront road serving the freshest fish, crab, prawns, squid and shellfish at very reasonable prices. The seafood is brought in daily by the local fishing boats and is significantly fresher and more affordable than the seafood in the main resort area. The Sang Thai restaurant is the most famous and has been serving excellent seafood for over 30 years.

05

Sunset Viewpoint

The hilltop at Khao Takiab is the finest sunset viewpoint in the Hua Hin area — the views west over the Gulf of Thailand and north along the length of Hua Hin Beach are extraordinary at sunset, with the golden Buddha silhouetted against the orange sky. The climb to the top takes 20 minutes and is well worth the effort for the sunset views. The beachfront seafood restaurants below are the perfect place for dinner after watching the sunset.

06

Aleenta Resort & Spa

The Aleenta Resort & Spa Hua Hin-Pranburi is one of the finest boutique resorts in Thailand — a beautiful, intimate resort on a private stretch of beach just south of Khao Takiab, with pool villas, an excellent spa and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. The resort is the most romantic and exclusive option in the Hua Hin area and is popular with honeymooners and couples seeking a private, luxurious escape.

07

Fishing Village

The small fishing village at the base of Khao Takiab is one of the most authentic and atmospheric places in Hua Hin — a working fishing community with colourful boats, fish drying racks and a genuine local character very different from the resort hotels of the main beach. The village is the source of the fresh seafood served in the Khao Takiab restaurants and is a fascinating place to explore in the early morning when the boats return.

08

Practical Tips

Khao Takiab is 5 minutes from central Hua Hin by songthaew or motorbike taxi. The hill climb takes approximately 20 minutes each way — wear good footwear and bring water. The monkeys at the temple are bold — do not bring food and keep bags closed. The seafood restaurants are open for lunch and dinner. November to April is the best time to visit.
