Cha-am Beach is a long, pleasant stretch of sand lined with casuarina trees that provide natural shade — a feature that makes it particularly popular with Thai families who prefer shade to direct sun. The beach is wide and the water is calm and warm. The atmosphere is the most authentically Thai of any beach in the area — at weekends the beach is busy with Bangkok families, food vendors, beach games and a genuinely festive local atmosphere.
Cha-am has the most authentic and affordable seafood and street food scene in the Hua Hin area — the beachfront road is lined with excellent local restaurants serving fresh seafood (grilled fish, steamed crab, fried squid) at very low prices, and the weekend market has excellent Thai street food. The seafood in Cha-am is as fresh as anywhere in Thailand and significantly more affordable than in Hua Hin.
Cha-am at weekends is one of the most authentic and entertaining Thai beach experiences available — the beach fills with Bangkok families, food vendors, beach games, inflatable water toys and a genuinely festive atmosphere. The contrast with the more sedate, international atmosphere of Hua Hin is striking. For travellers who want to experience Thai beach culture rather than a resort hotel experience, Cha-am at weekends is unmissable.
The Dusit Thani Hua Hin is the finest luxury hotel in the Cha-am area — a large, beautifully designed resort with 296 rooms and suites, multiple pools, an excellent spa, several restaurants and a private beach. The hotel is set in extensive tropical gardens and has a genuinely elegant atmosphere. It is the best value luxury resort in the Cha-am/Hua Hin area and is popular with families and couples.
Cha-am has excellent local markets — the Cha-am Night Market (open daily from 5pm) is the best street food market in the area, with excellent grilled seafood, Thai curries, fresh fruit and local snacks at very low prices. The weekend market on the beach road is the most atmospheric, with food vendors, craft stalls and a lively local atmosphere. The markets are the best place to experience authentic Thai beach culture.
Cha-am has good water sports facilities — jet skiing, banana boat rides, kayaking and paddleboarding are all available from the beach. The water sports operators on the beach are the most affordable in the Hua Hin area. The beach is also popular for kite flying, beach volleyball and football. The calm, shallow water makes Cha-am suitable for children and non-swimmers.
Kaeng Krachan National Park is 50 minutes from Cha-am — the largest national park in Thailand, with extraordinary wildlife (elephants, tigers, leopards, gibbons, over 400 bird species), a large reservoir and excellent hiking trails. The park is one of the finest wildlife destinations in Southeast Asia and is a superb day trip from Cha-am or Hua Hin. A guide is recommended for the best wildlife sightings.
Cha-am is 25 minutes north of Hua Hin by taxi or songthaew. The beach is easily walkable from all the main hotels. The town centre has a good selection of shops, restaurants and ATMs. November to April is the best time to visit. Cha-am is significantly more affordable than Hua Hin — accommodation, food and activities all cost less. The beach is busiest at weekends when Bangkok families arrive.
