Bangkok Holiday Guide

Bangkok is one of the world's great cities — a dazzling, chaotic, extraordinary metropolis where ancient temples sit alongside gleaming skyscrapers, tuk-tuks weave through traffic and the street food is the finest on earth. It is a city that rewards exploration and punishes those who only stay for a night.

The Grand Palace complex is the essential starting point. The dazzling collection of temples, halls and pavilions that served as the royal residence for 150 years is extraordinary — and the Emerald Buddha inside Wat Phra Kaew is Thailand's most sacred object. Wat Pho, adjacent to the Grand Palace, houses the extraordinary 46-metre Reclining Buddha and is the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, is best seen from the river at sunset.

The street food is the finest in the world. Chinatown's Yaowarat Road, the stalls around Silom and the night markets of Sukhumvit all offer extraordinary food at prices that seem impossible. Several Bangkok street food stalls have been awarded Michelin stars — and charge less than £2 a dish.

Bangkok's rooftop bars are among the world's finest. Lebua's Sky Bar, made famous by The Hangover II, and Vertigo at the Banyan Tree offer extraordinary views over the city skyline. Sunset is the best time to visit.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market — one of the world's largest, with over 15,000 stalls — is essential on a Saturday or Sunday. The floating markets at Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa are excellent day trips.

Bangkok is also the gateway to the rest of Thailand. Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai are all accessible by domestic flight in under two hours. Many visitors spend two or three nights in Bangkok at the start or end of a beach holiday.

The best time to visit is November to February — cooler, drier and more comfortable. March to May is very hot. The monsoon (June to October) brings rain but the city remains fully functional. Top 8 Things To Do in Bangkok

The temples, markets and experiences that make Bangkok one of the world's most extraordinary and rewarding city destinations.

01

Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew

The Grand Palace complex is Bangkok's most iconic sight — a dazzling collection of temples, halls and pavilions that served as the royal residence for 150 years. The Emerald Buddha inside Wat Phra Kaew is Thailand's most sacred object.

02

Wat Pho & the Reclining Buddha

Wat Pho, adjacent to the Grand Palace, houses the extraordinary 46-metre Reclining Buddha covered in gold leaf. The temple complex is also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage — the on-site school is one of the best in Thailand.

03

World's Best Street Food

Bangkok's street food is the finest in the world. Pad thai, green curry, som tam, boat noodles, mango sticky rice and the extraordinary variety of Chinatown's Yaowarat Road make every meal an event. Michelin-starred street stalls charge less than £2.

04

Floating Markets

Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa floating markets, accessible on day trips from Bangkok, are extraordinary — vendors selling food, flowers and goods from wooden boats on the canals. Amphawa is more authentic; Damnoen Saduak is more photogenic.

05

Rooftop Bars

Bangkok has some of the world's finest rooftop bars. Lebua's Sky Bar (The Hangover II), Vertigo at the Banyan Tree and Above Eleven in Sukhumvit all offer extraordinary views over the city skyline. Sunset is the best time to visit.

06

Chatuchak Weekend Market

One of the world's largest markets — over 15,000 stalls selling everything from antiques and clothing to plants and street food. Open Saturday and Sunday only. Arrive early to beat the heat and the crowds.

07

Chao Phraya River

The Chao Phraya river is Bangkok's lifeblood. The Chao Phraya Express Boat is the best way to see the city — stopping at temples, markets and the Grand Palace. Sunset dinner cruises are a romantic and memorable experience.

08

Luxury Hotels for Less

Bangkok has some of the world's finest luxury hotels at extraordinary prices. The Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, Capella and Rosewood all have exceptional properties. Five-star accommodation in Bangkok costs a fraction of equivalent hotels in London.
