Sukhumvit is Bangkok's most cosmopolitan and best-connected neighbourhood — a long, vibrant corridor stretching east from the city centre, served by the BTS Skytrain along its entire length. It is the most convenient base for exploring Bangkok, with the best hotels, restaurants and nightlife in the city.
The BTS Skytrain connects Sukhumvit directly to every major sight in Bangkok — the Grand Palace, Chatuchak Market, Silom's rooftop bars and the Chao Phraya river are all within 20–30 minutes. The Skytrain is fast, air-conditioned and very affordable.
Thonglor and Ekkamai (Soi 55 and 63) are Bangkok's most fashionable dining and nightlife districts — the food is extraordinary and the bars are excellent. Terminal 21 (at Asok) and the Emporium/EmQuartier (at Phrom Phong) are the finest shopping malls in Bangkok.
The luxury hotels of Sukhumvit are extraordinary value — five-star properties regularly cost under £100 per night. The JW Marriott, Westin, Sheraton Grande and Sofitel are all excellent.

Sukhumvit is served by the BTS Skytrain along its entire length — from Asok in the west to On Nut and beyond in the east. The Skytrain connects Sukhumvit directly to Siam (the shopping hub), Silom (the business district), the Chao Phraya river and Mo Chit (Chatuchak Market). It is the fastest, coolest and most comfortable way to get around Bangkok.
Thonglor (Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63) are Bangkok's most fashionable dining and nightlife districts — a dense concentration of excellent restaurants, rooftop bars, craft cocktail bars and live music venues. The food ranges from extraordinary Thai street food to world-class Japanese, Italian and modern Asian cuisine. This is where Bangkok's wealthy young professionals eat and drink.
Sukhumvit has the finest shopping in Bangkok. Terminal 21 (at Asok BTS) is a unique mall themed around world cities — each floor represents a different city (Tokyo, London, Paris, San Francisco). The Emporium and EmQuartier (at Phrom Phong BTS) are Bangkok's most upscale malls, with luxury brands, excellent restaurants and a rooftop garden.
The Asok and Nana areas (Soi 21 and Soi 3–11) have the most concentrated nightlife in Bangkok — dozens of bars, clubs, live music venues and rooftop bars within walking distance. The Nana Entertainment Plaza and the bars of Soi Cowboy are Bangkok's most famous nightlife strips. The area is lively every night of the week.
Sukhumvit has some of Bangkok's finest rooftop bars. Above Eleven (at Fraser Suites, Soi 11) has extraordinary views over the city skyline and excellent cocktails. Octave Rooftop Lounge (at the Marriott, Soi 57) has a three-level rooftop with 360-degree views. The Penthouse Bar at the Mode Sathorn is also excellent.
Sukhumvit has the finest concentration of luxury hotels in Bangkok. The JW Marriott, Westin, Sheraton Grande, Sofitel, Hyatt Regency and dozens of boutique hotels all offer exceptional accommodation at prices far below equivalent hotels in London or Singapore. Five-star hotels in Sukhumvit regularly cost under £100 per night.
Asiatique is Bangkok's most atmospheric night market — a beautifully converted 19th-century riverside warehouse complex with over 1,500 shops, 40 restaurants and a giant Ferris wheel. Accessible from Sukhumvit by BTS to Saphan Taksin then a free shuttle boat. Open every evening from 5pm. The riverside setting and the mix of shopping, food and entertainment make it unmissable.
Lumphini Park, a short BTS ride from Sukhumvit, is Bangkok's largest and most beautiful park — 142 acres of lakes, lawns and tree-lined paths in the heart of the city. The park is at its best in the early morning, when Bangkok residents exercise, practise tai chi and feed the giant monitor lizards that live in the lake. A peaceful escape from the city's intensity.
