The Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung) is the most important and atmospheric building in Ubud — the royal residence of the Ubud royal family, a magnificent complex of traditional Balinese architecture set at the junction of Jalan Raya Ubud and Jalan Suweta in the heart of the town. The palace is open to visitors during the day and hosts nightly traditional Balinese dance performances in the courtyard (the most atmospheric venue for dance in Bali). The palace is the finest example of traditional Balinese royal architecture.
Ubud has the finest traditional Balinese dance performances in Indonesia — nightly performances of the Kecak fire dance, the Legong dance, the Barong dance and the Ramayana ballet are held at the Ubud Palace, the Arma Museum and several other venues around the town. The Kecak fire dance at the Ubud Palace (performed at sunset in the palace courtyard) is the most atmospheric and spectacular performance in Bali. Tickets cost approximately £8–12 and should be booked in advance.
The Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni Ubud) is the finest crafts market in Bali — a lively, colourful market opposite the Ubud Palace selling traditional Balinese crafts, textiles, wood carvings, silver jewellery, batik, paintings and a variety of Indonesian crafts. The market is open daily from early morning and is the best place in Bali to buy traditional crafts at reasonable prices. Bargaining is expected. The market is at its most lively in the early morning when the local vendors are setting up.
Ubud has the finest restaurant scene in Bali and one of the best in Southeast Asia — a remarkable mix of traditional Balinese warungs, innovative Indonesian restaurants, international cuisine, raw food cafes and world-class fine dining. The best restaurants include Locavore (one of the finest restaurants in Asia, with an extraordinary tasting menu of local ingredients), Mozaic (French-influenced fine dining), Naughty Nuri's (legendary ribs and cocktails) and the many excellent warungs along Jalan Dewi Sita.
Ubud is the yoga and wellness capital of Southeast Asia — the town has dozens of yoga studios, meditation centres, Ayurvedic spas, healing practitioners and wellness retreats. The most famous yoga centre is the Yoga Barn (the largest and most established yoga centre in Bali, with a full programme of classes, workshops and retreats). The Ubud wellness scene was made famous by Elizabeth Gilbert's 'Eat Pray Love' and has grown enormously since. The cool highland climate makes Ubud ideal for yoga and meditation.
Ubud has the finest art scene in Bali — the town has been a centre of Balinese art since the 1930s when Western artists Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet settled here and encouraged the development of a distinctive Balinese painting style. The best galleries include the Neka Art Museum (the finest collection of Balinese art), the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) and the Blanco Renaissance Museum. The galleries are the best places to understand the extraordinary richness of Balinese artistic tradition.
Ubud Town has the finest and most varied accommodation in Bali — from simple guesthouses and family-run homestays to extraordinary luxury hotels and private villas. The finest hotels include the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan (the most spectacular hotel in Bali, set in a jungle valley above the Ayung River), the Komaneka at Bisma (extraordinary views over the rice paddies) and the Alaya Resort Ubud (beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of town). The town also has excellent mid-range and budget options.
Ubud Town is 1.5 hours from Ngurah Rai Airport by taxi. The town centre is walkable — Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Dewi Sita are the main streets. A motorbike or car hire is useful for exploring the surrounding area. April to October is the best time to visit (dry season). The town is busiest in July and August — book accommodation and restaurants in advance. The Ubud Palace dance performances should be booked in advance during peak season.
