The Mount Batur sunrise trek is the most popular adventure activity in Bali — a 2-hour climb up the active volcano (1,717m) in the dark, arriving at the summit for one of the most extraordinary sunrises in Southeast Asia. The views from the summit at sunrise — over the Batur caldera, the crater lake, the Agung volcano and across Bali to the sea — are extraordinary. The trek is moderately challenging (steep but not technical) and is suitable for reasonably fit people. A licensed guide is mandatory.
The Kintamani plateau on the rim of the Batur caldera has the most dramatic views in Bali — the vast caldera stretches 13km across, with the active Mount Batur volcano rising from the caldera floor and the sacred Danau Batur lake filling the eastern side. The views from the caldera rim are extraordinary and are the finest natural panorama in Bali. The best viewpoints are from the road along the caldera rim between Penelokan and Kintamani.
Danau Batur is the largest and most sacred lake in Bali — a beautiful crater lake filling the eastern side of the Batur caldera, with extraordinary views of the volcano and the caldera walls. The lake is sacred to the Balinese Hindu community and is the site of the Pura Ulun Danu Batur (one of the most important temples in Bali). The lake shore has several villages and hot springs. The lake is accessible by road from Kintamani and is the most beautiful lake in Bali.
The hot springs at the shore of Danau Batur are one of the most enjoyable natural experiences in Bali — natural hot pools fed by geothermal water from Mount Batur, set on the shore of the crater lake with extraordinary views of the volcano. The most popular hot springs are at Toya Bungkah village on the western shore of the lake. The hot springs are accessible by road from Kintamani (30 minutes) and are the most popular activity after the sunrise trek.
Pura Ulun Danu Batur is one of the most important temples in Bali — a magnificent complex of shrines and pavilions on the rim of the Batur caldera, with extraordinary views of the volcano and the lake. The temple is the second most important temple in Bali (after Pura Besakih) and is the spiritual guardian of the Batur caldera. The temple is open to visitors (sarong required) and is the finest temple in the Kintamani area.
Kintamani village is the most popular stopping point on the caldera rim — a small village with a series of restaurants and cafes perched on the edge of the caldera, with extraordinary views of the volcano and the lake. The restaurants serve a buffet lunch that is popular with tour groups. The village is the best place to stop for lunch and to enjoy the caldera views. The views are at their best in the morning before the clouds build up in the afternoon.
Penglipuran is the most beautiful and well-preserved traditional Balinese village in the Ubud area — a perfectly maintained village with traditional bamboo architecture, a single main street lined with identical family compounds and a strong community tradition. The village is 30 minutes south of Kintamani on the road back to Ubud and is an excellent addition to a Kintamani day trip. The village is open to visitors and is the finest example of traditional Balinese village planning.
Kintamani is 1.5 hours north of Ubud by car. The sunrise trek departs at 3–4am from Toya Bungkah village on the lake shore — a licensed guide is mandatory (approximately £20–30 per person). Book the guide in advance through your hotel or a tour operator in Ubud. April to October is the best time for the trek (dry season). The caldera views are best in the morning before the clouds build up. Bring warm clothing for the summit — it is cold at 1,717m.
