The Campuhan Ridge Walk is the most beautiful and accessible walk in Ubud — a narrow, paved path along a ridge above the confluence of the Wos Barat and Wos Timur rivers, with extraordinary views of jungle valleys on both sides. The walk starts at the Pura Gunung Lebah temple (15 minutes walk from the Ubud Palace) and follows the ridge for approximately 2km to the village of Bangkiang Sidem, where it joins the road to Penestanan. The full walk takes approximately 1–1.5 hours at a leisurely pace.
The Campuhan Ridge Walk is one of the finest photography locations in Ubud — the narrow ridge path, the jungle valleys on both sides, the rice paddies and the extraordinary light in the early morning create beautiful photographic opportunities. The best time to photograph the ridge is at sunrise (arrive by 6am) when the mist is in the valleys and the light is soft and golden. The walk is at its most beautiful in the early morning before the heat of the day.
Pura Gunung Lebah is the ancient temple at the start of the Campuhan Ridge Walk — a beautiful and atmospheric Hindu temple set at the confluence of the two sacred rivers, with a dramatic setting among tall trees and the sound of the rivers below. The temple is one of the oldest in the Ubud area and is still in active use. It is open to visitors (sarong required) and is the most atmospheric starting point for the ridge walk. The temple is particularly beautiful in the early morning.
The Campuhan Ridge Walk at sunrise is one of the finest experiences in Bali — the mist in the jungle valleys, the golden light on the rice paddies, the cool highland air and the complete absence of crowds make the early morning walk extraordinary. The walk starts at the Pura Gunung Lebah temple and the sunrise is visible from the ridge looking east over the Ubud highlands. Arrive at the temple by 6am to catch the best light. The walk is significantly more enjoyable in the cool of the morning than in the midday heat.
The Campuhan Ridge Walk can be extended to the village of Penestanan — a quiet, artistic village of painters and craftsmen 30 minutes beyond the end of the ridge path. The walk from the ridge to Penestanan passes through rice paddies and traditional Balinese compounds and is one of the most rewarding walks in the Ubud area. Penestanan has several excellent cafes and restaurants and is the finest place for lunch after the morning ridge walk.
Murni's Warung is the most famous and atmospheric restaurant on the Campuhan Ridge Walk — a legendary Ubud institution perched on the edge of the Campuhan gorge, with extraordinary views of the river and the jungle below. The restaurant has been open since 1974 and is one of the oldest restaurants in Ubud. The food is excellent (traditional Balinese and Indonesian cuisine) and the setting is extraordinary. The restaurant is the finest place for breakfast or lunch after the ridge walk.
The Campuhan Ridge Walk has several warungs and cafes along the route — simple, open-air cafes with views of the rice paddies and the jungle valleys. The best include the Karsa Kafe (at the start of the walk, with a beautiful terrace overlooking the river gorge) and the Warung Bodag Maliah (at the end of the ridge, with views of the rice paddies). The warungs serve simple Indonesian food and cold drinks at very reasonable prices.
The Campuhan Ridge Walk starts at the Pura Gunung Lebah temple on Jalan Raya Campuhan, 15 minutes walk west of the Ubud Palace. The walk is free and open at all times. The best time to walk is at sunrise (arrive by 6am) or in the late afternoon (4–6pm). The walk is paved and suitable for all fitness levels. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sunscreen and water. The walk can be muddy after rain. The full walk to Penestanan and back takes approximately 2.5–3 hours.
