Mas is the wood carving capital of Indonesia — a village of master craftsmen who have been carving wood for generations, producing extraordinary masks, figures, furniture, decorative panels and architectural elements. The workshops line the main road through the village and are open to visitors — it is possible to watch the craftsmen at work and to buy directly from the workshop. The wood carvings of Mas are the finest in Bali and are significantly cheaper than in the tourist shops of Ubud Town or Seminyak.
Celuk is the silver and gold jewellery centre of Bali — a village of family workshops producing intricate traditional and contemporary jewellery in silver and gold. The workshops are open to visitors and it is possible to watch the craftsmen at work and to commission custom pieces. The jewellery of Celuk is the finest in Bali and is significantly cheaper than in the jewellery shops of Ubud Town or Seminyak. The traditional Balinese silver work (with its characteristic filigree and repousse techniques) is particularly beautiful.
The most rewarding experience in Mas and Celuk is watching the master craftsmen at work — the wood carvers of Mas use traditional tools and techniques that have been passed down through generations, and the silver workers of Celuk produce intricate filigree work by hand. The workshops are open to visitors and the craftsmen are generally happy to demonstrate their techniques. The experience gives an extraordinary insight into the traditional craft traditions of Bali.
Mas and Celuk are the best places in Bali to buy traditional crafts at reasonable prices — the workshops sell directly to visitors without the mark-up of the tourist shops. The wood carvings of Mas range from small decorative pieces (£5–20) to large sculptures (£50–500+). The silver jewellery of Celuk ranges from simple rings and earrings (£10–30) to elaborate necklaces and bracelets (£50–200+). Bargaining is expected in the smaller workshops; the larger galleries have fixed prices.
The road between Mas and Ubud passes through several traditional Balinese villages with beautiful temples and rice paddies. The most notable is the Pura Taman Saraswati in Ubud Town (the water palace temple with its famous lotus pond) and the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal (the temple of the dead adjacent to the Monkey Forest). The temples are the finest examples of traditional Balinese religious architecture in the Ubud area.
The Pura Puseh Batuan is one of the most important and beautiful temples in the Ubud area — a magnificent 10th-century temple in the village of Batuan, between Celuk and Ubud, with extraordinary carved stone gates, shrines and courtyards. The temple is one of the oldest in Bali and is still in active use. It is open to visitors (sarong required) and is the finest temple in the Ubud area outside of the town centre.
The village of Batuan (between Celuk and Ubud) is the home of the Batuan painting style — a distinctive Balinese painting tradition dating from the 1930s, characterised by dense, intricate compositions in black ink and grey wash, depicting scenes from Balinese mythology and daily life. The Batuan style is one of the most distinctive and celebrated Balinese art forms. Several galleries in Batuan sell original Batuan-style paintings at reasonable prices.
Mas is 5km south of Ubud Town on the main road to Denpasar; Celuk is 8km south of Ubud. Both are best visited by taxi or car hire — the road is busy and not suitable for walking. The workshops are generally open from 9am to 5pm daily. April to October is the best time to visit. Allow 2–3 hours for a visit to both villages. The best approach is to visit Celuk first (on the way from Denpasar) and then Mas (on the way back to Ubud).
