Tonsai village is the only real settlement on Phi Phi Don — a compact, car-free maze of lanes packed with restaurants, bars, dive shops, tour operators, souvenir stalls and guesthouses. The main pier is the arrival point for all ferries from Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta. The village has a lively, backpacker-meets-resort atmosphere that is unique in Thailand.
Tonsai Bay has the best concentration of dive shops on Phi Phi — several PADI dive centres offer day trips to the finest dive sites in the Andaman Sea, including Hin Daeng and Hin Muang (two of the top ten dive sites in the world), King Cruiser Wreck and the reefs around Phi Phi Leh. The snorkelling directly from Tonsai Bay is also excellent.
The limestone karst cliffs above Tonsai Bay offer some of the finest rock climbing in Southeast Asia — a range of routes from beginner to expert on the dramatic vertical walls above the beach. Several climbing schools operate in the village and offer guided sessions. The views from the top of the cliffs are extraordinary.
Tonsai village has the widest choice of restaurants on Phi Phi — Thai, seafood, Indian, Italian and international cuisine is available throughout the village. The beachfront restaurants on Tonsai Bay are excellent for fresh seafood. The night market in the village is the best place for authentic Thai street food at very low prices.
Tonsai village has the most lively nightlife on Phi Phi — a strip of bars and beach clubs along the Loh Dalum Bay side of the isthmus (a 2-minute walk from Tonsai pier). The Sunflower Bar and the Ibiza Bar are among the most popular. The fire shows on the beach are a nightly spectacle. The nightlife is lively but more relaxed than Patong.
Tonsai village has the best shopping and services on Phi Phi — souvenir shops, clothing stalls, pharmacies, ATMs, tour operators and dive shops are all concentrated in the village. It is the only place on the island where you can buy supplies, book tours and access services. Everything is within easy walking distance of the pier.
Tonsai Beach itself is a pleasant, sheltered bay with calm water — good for swimming and kayaking. The beach is lined with longtail boats and has a lively, working harbour atmosphere. The snorkelling at the edges of the bay is good, with coral and fish visible in the clear water.
Tonsai Bay is the most central location on Phi Phi Don — the narrow isthmus means Loh Dalum Bay (the most beautiful beach on the island) is just a 2-minute walk away. Long Beach is a 20-minute walk or a short longtail ride. The village is the best base for those who want easy access to all parts of the island.
