Bamboo Island has one of the most beautiful beaches in the Phi Phi Islands — a wide stretch of powder-white sand with crystal-clear turquoise water of extraordinary clarity. The beach is completely undeveloped and has a pristine, natural character. The island is small enough to walk around in about 30 minutes, and the beaches on all sides are beautiful.
Bamboo Island has some of the finest snorkelling in the Andaman Sea — a healthy coral reef surrounds the island with excellent visibility and abundant marine life including blacktip reef sharks, turtles, rays, moray eels and a huge variety of tropical fish. The snorkelling is accessible directly from the beach. The reef is in excellent condition.
Bamboo Island is one of the best places in the Phi Phi Islands to see blacktip reef sharks — the shallow reef around the island is a regular habitat for these beautiful, harmless sharks. Seeing a blacktip reef shark while snorkelling is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in Thailand. The sharks are completely harmless to swimmers.
Bamboo Island is completely undeveloped — there are no permanent buildings, no roads and no facilities beyond a basic toilet block. The island is covered in tropical vegetation and the beaches are in a pristine natural state. The absence of development makes it one of the most beautiful and unspoilt islands in the Phi Phi area.
Bamboo Island has a wonderfully peaceful and natural atmosphere — the only sounds are the waves, the birds and the wind in the palm trees. Day-trippers arrive in the morning and leave in the afternoon, and the island is at its most peaceful in the early morning and late afternoon. The light on the beach in the late afternoon is extraordinary.
Bamboo Island is approximately 9km north of Phi Phi Don — accessible by longtail boat (approximately 30–40 minutes) or speedboat (approximately 15 minutes) from Tonsai pier. Most organised day trips from Phi Phi Don include Bamboo Island as part of a wider island-hopping itinerary. Day trips from Phuket also include Bamboo Island.
Bamboo Island is one of the most photogenic locations in the Phi Phi Islands — the combination of powder-white sand, turquoise water, limestone cliffs and lush tropical vegetation creates extraordinary photographic opportunities. The best light is in the early morning and late afternoon. The underwater photography is also excellent.
Bamboo Island has minimal facilities — a basic toilet block and a small refreshment stand are the only permanent facilities. Visitors should bring their own food, water and sun protection. The island has no shade on the beach, so sun protection is essential. The lack of facilities is part of the island's appeal.
