Monkey Beach is home to a resident colony of long-tailed macaque monkeys that come down to the beach to interact with visitors. The monkeys are bold and entertaining — they will approach visitors looking for food (feeding is discouraged) and their antics are highly entertaining. Seeing the monkeys on the beach is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in the Phi Phi Islands.
Monkey Beach is a beautiful, small cove on the northwest coast of Phi Phi Don — a sheltered bay with clear water, a small sandy beach and a backdrop of lush jungle and limestone cliffs. The cove is accessible only by longtail boat and has a wild, natural character. The setting is beautiful and the atmosphere is completely different from the main beaches.
The snorkelling at Monkey Beach is excellent — a healthy coral reef surrounds the cove with good visibility and abundant marine life. The reef is accessible directly from the beach and the snorkelling is suitable for all abilities. The combination of the monkeys on the beach and the marine life in the water makes Monkey Beach one of the most diverse wildlife experiences in Phi Phi.
Monkey Beach is accessible only by longtail boat from Tonsai pier — the journey takes approximately 15 minutes. Longtail boats can be hired from the pier for a private trip or Monkey Beach is included in most organised island-hopping day trips. The boat journey itself is beautiful, passing along the dramatic northwest coast of Phi Phi Don.
Monkey Beach is the perfect half-day excursion from Phi Phi Don — the boat trip, time with the monkeys and snorkelling can all be done in 2–3 hours. It is commonly combined with a visit to Phi Phi Leh (Maya Bay, Viking Cave) as part of a full-day island-hopping trip. Most tour operators in Tonsai village offer combined trips.
Monkey Beach is one of the most photogenic locations in the Phi Phi Islands — the combination of the monkeys, the beautiful cove and the dramatic limestone scenery creates extraordinary photographic opportunities. The monkeys are particularly photogenic and will often pose for photographs. Keep cameras and bags secure as the monkeys are known to grab shiny objects.
In addition to the macaque monkeys, Monkey Beach is home to a variety of tropical birds, monitor lizards and the marine life of the surrounding reef. The jungle behind the beach is dense and largely unexplored. The area is one of the most wildlife-rich in the Phi Phi Islands.
Do not feed the monkeys — feeding encourages aggressive behaviour and is harmful to their health. Keep food and bags secure as the monkeys will grab anything they can reach. Do not touch the monkeys as they can bite. Enjoy them from a respectful distance. The monkeys are wild animals and should be treated as such.
