Tanjung Benoa has the widest range of water sports in Bali — the calm, sheltered waters of Benoa Bay are ideal for a huge variety of activities. The most popular include parasailing (the most popular activity, with extraordinary views of the peninsula and the bay), jet skiing, banana boats, flying fish (a large inflatable towed at speed behind a boat), wakeboarding, water skiing, glass-bottom boat rides and snorkelling trips. Most activities cost £10–30 per session and can be booked directly with the operators on the beach.
The Turtle Island (Pulau Serangan) trip is the most popular excursion from Tanjung Benoa — a short boat trip to a small island that is home to a sea turtle conservation centre, where green and hawksbill turtles are bred and raised before being released into the ocean. The centre is open to visitors and it is possible to hold and photograph the turtles. The island also has a Hindu temple and a small beach. The trip takes approximately 1.5 hours and costs approximately £15–20 per person.
The glass-bottom boat trips from Tanjung Benoa are the most accessible way to see the marine life of Benoa Bay without getting wet — the boats have a glass panel in the hull that allows passengers to see the coral reef and fish below. The trips take approximately 30–45 minutes and cost approximately £8–12 per person. The marine life in Benoa Bay includes reef fish, sea turtles and occasional rays. The glass-bottom boat is the best option for families with young children.
Tanjung Benoa has good snorkelling and diving in the calm waters of Benoa Bay — the reefs have a variety of coral and reef fish, and sea turtles are frequently seen. The snorkelling is accessible directly from the beach or by boat to the better reef sections. Diving is available from several operators on the peninsula. The diving is less spectacular than at Amed or Tulamben on the north coast, but the calm conditions and easy access make Tanjung Benoa a good option for beginners.
Tanjung Benoa is a narrow, 4km-long peninsula with the calm waters of Benoa Bay on the west side and the Indian Ocean on the east side. The peninsula has a distinctive character — a mix of water sports operators, mid-range hotels, seafood restaurants and local fishing boats. The road along the peninsula is the main street and is lined with water sports operators, restaurants and souvenir shops. The tip of the peninsula has a small Hindu temple and good views of the bay.
Tanjung Benoa has a good range of mid-range accommodation — a mix of hotels, guesthouses and villas that offer a more affordable alternative to the five-star resorts of Nusa Dua. The best hotels include the Conrad Bali (the finest hotel on the peninsula, with a beautiful beachfront location), the Novotel Bali Benoa and the Club Med Bali. The accommodation in Tanjung Benoa is generally significantly cheaper than in Nusa Dua and is a good option for those who want to be close to the water sports.
Tanjung Benoa has excellent seafood restaurants — the peninsula has a strong fishing tradition and the seafood is fresh and excellent. The best restaurants are the open-air seafood restaurants along the main road, where you can choose your fish from a display of fresh catch and have it cooked to order. The prices are significantly lower than in the resort restaurants of Nusa Dua. The Bumbu Bali restaurant (just south of the peninsula) is the finest Balinese restaurant in the area.
Tanjung Benoa is 5 minutes north of Nusa Dua by taxi and 25 minutes from the airport. The water sports operators are on the beach along the western (bay) side of the peninsula. Prices for water sports are negotiable — bargain for packages if doing multiple activities. April to October is the best time for water sports (calmer conditions). The water sports are available year-round due to the sheltered bay. Book the Turtle Island trip in advance during peak season.
