Pura Bualu is the village temple of Bualu — a beautiful and atmospheric Hindu temple at the heart of the village, with traditional Balinese architecture, carved stone gates and shrines, and a genuine community life. The temple is still in active use by the Bualu community and is the spiritual centre of the village. It is open to respectful visitors (sarong required) and is the finest temple in the Nusa Dua area. Temple ceremonies are held regularly and are open to visitors.
Bualu Village has the best value and most authentic dining in the Nusa Dua area — a cluster of local warungs and restaurants serving traditional Balinese and Indonesian food at a fraction of the price of the resort restaurants. The best warungs serve nasi campur (mixed rice with various side dishes), mie goreng (fried noodles), babi guling (suckling pig) and fresh seafood. The warungs are the most popular dining option for resort staff and local workers and are the most authentic food experience in Nusa Dua.
Bualu Village has a small local market and several craft workshops selling traditional Balinese crafts, textiles and souvenirs at prices significantly lower than in the resort shops or the Bali Collection. The market is the most authentic shopping experience in Nusa Dua and is the best place to buy traditional crafts directly from local craftsmen. The craft workshops produce wood carvings, silver jewellery, batik and traditional Balinese textiles.
The Bumbu Bali restaurant, just outside the Nusa Dua resort complex near Bualu Village, is the finest Balinese restaurant in the area — a legendary institution run by chef Heinz von Holzen, who has spent decades researching and preserving traditional Balinese cuisine. The restaurant serves an extraordinary range of authentic Balinese dishes that are rarely found in tourist restaurants, and also offers cooking classes. It is the most important restaurant in Nusa Dua for those who want to understand Balinese food.
Bualu Village is the best place in Nusa Dua to experience traditional Balinese community life — the village has maintained its traditional character and social structure despite being surrounded by luxury resorts. The village has its own banjar (community organisation), temple ceremonies, cremation rituals and daily offerings. Walking through the village in the early morning or evening gives an extraordinary insight into the daily life of a traditional Balinese community.
Bualu Village holds regular temple ceremonies throughout the year — the Balinese Hindu calendar is full of ceremonies and festivals, and the Pura Bualu hosts several major ceremonies each year. The ceremonies are open to respectful visitors and are the most authentic cultural experience in the Nusa Dua area. The most spectacular ceremonies involve elaborate offerings, gamelan music, traditional dance and colourful processions. Ask at your hotel for the schedule of upcoming ceremonies.
Geger Beach is a beautiful and relatively secluded beach just south of Bualu Village — a long stretch of white sand with calmer conditions than the main Nusa Dua Beach and a more local, authentic atmosphere. The beach has a few simple warungs and is popular with local Balinese families at weekends. The Pura Geger temple sits on the headland above the beach. Geger Beach is the finest alternative to the main Nusa Dua Beach for those who want a quieter and more authentic experience.
Bualu Village is inside the Nusa Dua resort complex, accessible on foot from all the major resorts (5–15 minutes walk). The village is best explored on foot — the lanes are too narrow for cars. The warungs are open from early morning to late evening. The local market is most active in the early morning. April to October is the best time to visit. The village is a pleasant contrast to the polished resort environment and is highly recommended for all visitors to Nusa Dua.
