The Marsaxlokk harbour is the most beautiful and photogenic harbour in Malta — a large, sheltered bay filled with hundreds of brightly painted traditional luzzu fishing boats, each decorated with the Eye of Osiris (a Phoenician symbol of protection) on the prow. The luzzu is the most distinctive and celebrated symbol of Maltese maritime culture and has been used by Maltese fishermen for thousands of years. The harbour is the most photographed scene in Malta and is at its most beautiful in the early morning light.
The Marsaxlokk fish market is the finest fish market in the Mediterranean — held every Sunday morning along the harbour promenade, the market sells the freshest fish and seafood in Malta, caught by the local fishing fleet the previous night. The market is the most authentic and atmospheric market in Malta and is the finest place to buy fresh fish. The seafood restaurants along the harbour promenade are the best in Malta — the most celebrated include the Tartarun (the finest seafood restaurant in Marsaxlokk) and the many good restaurants along the waterfront.
St Peter's Pool is the finest natural swimming pool in Malta — a beautiful natural rock pool on the Delimara Peninsula, 3km east of Marsaxlokk, with crystal-clear turquoise water, dramatic limestone cliffs and extraordinary views of the Mediterranean. The pool is accessible on foot from the road (15-minute walk) or by boat from Marsaxlokk. The snorkelling at St Peter's Pool is excellent — the clear water and rocky seabed are home to a variety of marine life. The pool is the finest swimming spot in southern Malta.
The Delimara Peninsula is the most dramatic coastal landscape in southern Malta — a rocky headland east of Marsaxlokk with extraordinary views of the Mediterranean, dramatic limestone cliffs, St Peter's Pool and the most unspoilt coastal scenery in the south of the island. The peninsula is accessible by car or on foot from Marsaxlokk and is the finest walking area in southern Malta. The views from the headland are extraordinary — on a clear day, Sicily is visible on the horizon.
Marsaxlokk has the most genuinely Maltese village atmosphere of any destination on the island — a working fishing village with a real community, traditional limestone buildings, a beautiful parish church (the Church of Our Lady of Pompei, with an extraordinary facade overlooking the harbour) and a way of life that has changed little in centuries. The village is the finest place in Malta to experience authentic Maltese culture and is a world away from the tourist resorts of the north.
The Marsaxlokk area has excellent swimming and snorkelling — St Peter's Pool (3km east) is the finest natural swimming spot in southern Malta. The rocky coastline around the Delimara Peninsula has several good snorkelling spots. The water in the south of Malta is generally calmer and clearer than in the north. The area is excellent for those who want to combine authentic Maltese culture with good swimming and snorkelling.
Marsaxlokk is the finest base for exploring southern Malta — the prehistoric temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra (the most important prehistoric monuments in Malta, 20 minutes west) are the finest day trip from Marsaxlokk. The Blue Grotto (a spectacular sea cave, 25 minutes west) is the most popular natural attraction in southern Malta. The Ghar Dalam Cave (the most important prehistoric site in Malta, 10 minutes north) has extraordinary fossils of dwarf elephants and hippopotamuses.
Marsaxlokk is 20 minutes from Malta International Airport by taxi and 40 minutes from Valletta by bus. The Sunday fish market is the most popular time to visit — arrive early (before 9am) for the best selection and the most atmospheric experience. The harbour is at its most beautiful in the early morning light. The seafood restaurants are excellent for lunch — the freshest fish in Malta. Year-round is a good time to visit. The village is much quieter and more authentic than the northern resorts.
