The Blue Lagoon is the most extraordinary natural feature in Malta and one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in the world — a shallow, crystal-clear turquoise lagoon between Comino and the tiny islet of Cominotto, with water of extraordinary colour and clarity (visibility to the sandy bottom in up to 5m of water). The lagoon is the most popular day trip destination in Malta and attracts thousands of visitors daily in peak season. The water colour — an extraordinary shade of turquoise — is the result of the white sandy bottom and the clarity of the Mediterranean water.
The Blue Lagoon is the finest swimming and snorkelling destination in Malta — the water is shallow (1–5m), crystal-clear and warm (22–26°C in summer), with a sandy bottom and excellent visibility. The snorkelling is extraordinary — the rocky edges of the lagoon are home to a variety of fish, sea urchins, octopus and other marine life. The lagoon is ideal for all ages and swimming abilities. The best snorkelling is around the rocky edges of the lagoon and around the Cominotto islet.
Santa Marija Bay is the quieter and more peaceful alternative to the Blue Lagoon — a beautiful, sheltered bay on the north coast of Comino, with clear water, a small sandy beach and a much smaller number of visitors than the Blue Lagoon. The bay is accessible on foot from the Blue Lagoon (15-minute walk across the island) or by boat. The bay is the finest place on Comino for those who want a more peaceful and less crowded swimming experience.
St Mary's Tower is the most historic monument on Comino — a 17th-century watchtower built by the Knights of St John in 1618 to guard the channel between Malta and Gozo. The tower is one of the finest examples of the coastal watchtower network built by the Knights and is in an excellent state of preservation. The tower is accessible on foot from the Blue Lagoon (20-minute walk) and has extraordinary views of the Blue Lagoon, Gozo and the north coast of Malta.
Comino is the finest walking destination in the Maltese archipelago — a tiny, car-free island of wild thyme, rosemary, capers and other aromatic plants, with dramatic coastal scenery, extraordinary views and complete peace and quiet. The island can be walked in its entirety in 2–3 hours. The coastal path from the Blue Lagoon to Santa Marija Bay and St Mary's Tower is the finest walk on the island. The island is at its most beautiful in spring (March–May) when the wildflowers are in bloom.
The Blue Lagoon is accessible only by boat — ferries depart from Cirkewwa (north Malta) and from Mgarr (Gozo) and take 20–30 minutes. Day trip boats also depart from Sliema, St Julian's, Bugibba and Mellieha. The most popular option is the day trip boat from Sliema or Bugibba, which includes a cruise around Comino and several hours at the Blue Lagoon. Private boat hire is also available for those who want a more exclusive experience. Book day trip boats in advance in peak season.
Comino has one hotel — the Comino Hotel (open from April to October), which has a beautiful location on Santa Marija Bay and is the only accommodation on the island. Staying on Comino is the finest way to experience the island — the Blue Lagoon in the early morning and evening (before and after the day trip boats arrive) is extraordinarily beautiful and peaceful. The hotel has a beach, a pool, restaurants and water sports facilities. Book well in advance — the hotel is very popular.
The Blue Lagoon is extremely crowded in July and August — arrive early (before 9am) or late (after 4pm) to avoid the worst of the crowds. The day trip boats from Sliema and Bugibba are the most convenient option. The ferry from Cirkewwa is the cheapest option. Bring your own food and water — the facilities on the island are limited and expensive. The Blue Lagoon has no shade — bring sun protection. May, June, September and October are the best months to visit — warm, less crowded.
