Call 01282 960 460The Ggantija Temples, the world-class diving at the Blue Hole and Inland Sea, the beautiful fishing villages, the walled capital Victoria and the most authentic and peaceful island experience in the Mediterranean.
The Ggantija Temples are the most extraordinary prehistoric monuments in Malta and among the most remarkable in the world — two megalithic temples built around 3600–3200 BC, making them the oldest freestanding structures in the world (older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids). The temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are in an extraordinary state of preservation. The massive limestone blocks (some weighing over 50 tonnes) were moved without the use of metal tools or the wheel — the engineering achievement is extraordinary.
Gozo has the finest diving in the Mediterranean — the Blue Hole (a natural circular rock formation on the west coast, leading to an underwater arch and a dramatic wall dive) is considered one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. The Inland Sea (a shallow lagoon connected to the open sea by a tunnel through the cliff) is the most dramatic and atmospheric dive site in Malta. The Cathedral Cave (an enormous underwater cave near Dwejra) is the most impressive cave dive in the Mediterranean. Gozo is a world-class dive destination.
Dwejra is the most dramatic coastal landscape in Gozo — a spectacular area of cliffs, sea caves and the Inland Sea on the west coast. The Azure Window (a famous natural limestone arch that collapsed in 2017) was the most iconic natural feature in Malta, but the area remains extraordinary — the Inland Sea, the Blue Hole and the dramatic cliff scenery are unmissable. The Dwejra area is the finest coastal walk in Gozo and the best base for diving and snorkelling.
Victoria (also known as Rabat) is the capital of Gozo — a beautiful walled town on a hilltop in the centre of the island, with the most dramatic citadel (Il-Kastell) in Malta, extraordinary views of the whole island from the citadel walls, excellent museums and the most authentic Maltese character of any town in the archipelago. The citadel was the refuge of the entire population of Gozo during the Ottoman raids of the 16th century. The Cathedral of the Assumption (with its extraordinary trompe l'oeil ceiling) is the finest church in Gozo.
Xlendi and Marsalforn are the most charming fishing villages in Gozo — Xlendi is a beautiful, sheltered bay on the south coast, with a small sandy beach, excellent restaurants and a peaceful, authentic atmosphere. Marsalforn is the most popular resort in Gozo — a charming fishing village on the north coast, with a good beach, excellent restaurants and a lively but relaxed atmosphere. Both villages are the finest places to stay in Gozo for those who want a more authentic, rural experience.
Gozo has the finest food in the Maltese archipelago — the island is famous for its excellent local produce (Gozitan cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, local honey, Gozitan wine) and its traditional restaurants. The best include the Ta' Frenc Restaurant (the finest restaurant in Gozo, in a beautiful converted farmhouse), the Oleander Restaurant in Gharb (excellent traditional Maltese food) and the many good restaurants in Xlendi and Marsalforn. The Gozitan ftira (a traditional bread filled with local produce) is the finest street food in Malta.
Gozo is accessible by ferry from Cirkewwa (north Malta) — the crossing takes 25 minutes and ferries run every 45 minutes (more frequently in summer). The ferry terminal at Cirkewwa is 40 minutes from Valletta and 5 minutes from Mellieha. A hire car is the best way to explore Gozo — the island is small (14km x 7km) but the roads are narrow and the sights are spread across the island. Gozo can be visited as a day trip from Malta or as a multi-day stay.
Gozo is best explored by hire car — the island is small but the sights are spread across it. The ferry from Cirkewwa takes 25 minutes and runs every 45 minutes. April to November is the best time to visit. The diving is best from April to October. The island is much quieter and more peaceful than Malta — ideal for those who want a more relaxed, rural experience. Book accommodation well in advance for July and August. The Ggantija Temples require a ticket — book online in advance.
