Malta is one of Europe's most extraordinary and underrated destinations — a tiny island (27km by 14km) with more history per square mile than almost anywhere on earth. The ancient walled capital Valletta, the prehistoric temples older than Stonehenge, the Blue Lagoon on Comino, some of the best diving in the Mediterranean and 300 days of sunshine a year.
Valletta is one of the most extraordinary capital cities in Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with Baroque architecture, the extraordinary St John's Co-Cathedral (with Caravaggio's largest painting), the Grand Harbour and the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2018 and has been transformed by investment in its arts and food scene.
The Blue Lagoon on the tiny island of Comino is one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in Europe — crystal-clear turquoise water in a sheltered bay surrounded by white limestone cliffs. It is best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid the day-trip crowds.
Malta has some of the best diving in the Mediterranean. The exceptional visibility (30–40m), warm water, extraordinary wrecks and the famous Blue Hole on Gozo make it one of Europe's top diving destinations. The diving is excellent for beginners and experienced divers alike.
Mdina, the medieval walled city on a hilltop in the centre of Malta, is one of the most atmospheric places in Europe. With a permanent population of just 300 people, the narrow streets, the Baroque cathedral and the extraordinary silence make it unmissable.
Malta is English-speaking, uses the euro, is very safe and is very affordable by European standards. It is an excellent year-round destination — warm even in winter. We search across Travelpack, Emirates Holidays and JTA Holidays for the best deals, with the FIBI discount applied automatically.

Valletta is one of the most extraordinary capital cities in Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and European Capital of Culture, packed with Baroque architecture, the extraordinary St John's Co-Cathedral, the Grand Harbour and the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Every street is a history lesson.
The Blue Lagoon on the tiny island of Comino is one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in Europe — crystal-clear turquoise water in a sheltered bay surrounded by white limestone cliffs. Accessible by boat from Malta and Gozo. Best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.
Malta has some of the best diving in the Mediterranean — exceptional visibility (30–40m), warm water, extraordinary wrecks (including the HMS Maori and the Um El Faroud), caves, tunnels and excellent marine life. The Blue Hole on Gozo is one of the most famous dive sites in Europe.
Malta's megalithic temples are older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids — the Ggantija temples on Gozo (3,600 BC) and the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra temples on Malta are among the oldest free-standing structures on earth. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mdina is one of the most atmospheric places in Europe — a medieval walled city on a hilltop in the centre of Malta, with a permanent population of just 300 people. The narrow streets, the Baroque cathedral, the views over the island and the extraordinary silence make it unmissable.
Gozo is Malta's smaller, quieter and more rural sister island — a beautiful island with the Azure Window (now collapsed but still a famous dive site), the Ggantija temples, excellent diving, beautiful beaches and a slower pace of life. Accessible by ferry from Malta in 25 minutes.
Malta has one of the best climates in Europe — 300 days of sunshine a year, warm winters (16°C in January) and hot summers (32°C in July and August). It is an excellent year-round destination, particularly good for winter sun breaks when the rest of Europe is cold.
The Three Cities — Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua — are the historic fortified cities across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. Less visited than Valletta but equally extraordinary, with the Inquisitor's Palace, the Maritime Museum and extraordinary views of the Grand Harbour.
