Italy Holiday Guide

Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country — and more to see, eat and experience than almost anywhere on earth. Rome's ancient ruins, Florence's Renaissance art, Venice's canals, the Amalfi Coast's dramatic cliffs, Sicily's Greek temples and the Italian Lakes' extraordinary beauty make it one of the world's great travel destinations.

Rome is the essential starting point — the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. Two thousand years of history in a city that is also one of the world's great food and nightlife destinations. Three days is the minimum; a week is better.

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world — a 50km stretch of dramatic cliffs, pastel-coloured villages, lemon groves and turquoise sea. Positano, Ravello and Amalfi itself are among the most beautiful towns in Europe. Best visited in May, June or September — July and August are very crowded and very hot.

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance — the Uffizi Gallery, Michelangelo's David, Brunelleschi's Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio are extraordinary. The Tuscan countryside — rolling hills, cypress trees, vineyards and medieval hilltop towns — is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.

Venice is one of the most extraordinary cities ever built — 118 islands connected by 400 bridges, with no cars and no roads. Best visited in spring or autumn to avoid the summer crowds and the acqua alta flooding.

Sardinia has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe — the turquoise waters of the Costa Smeralda and the dramatic cliffs of the Golfo di Orosei. Sicily is one of the most extraordinary islands in the Mediterranean — Greek temples, Baroque towns, Mount Etna and extraordinary food.

The best time to visit Italy is April to June and September to October — warm, sunny and with fewer crowds than July and August. We search across Travelpack, Emirates Holidays and JTA Holidays for the best deals, with the FIBI discount applied automatically.
