The Fisherman's Village is the most atmospheric and charming area on Koh Samui — a row of beautifully restored 100-year-old Chinese shophouses along the beachfront, converted into excellent restaurants, boutique shops, art galleries and stylish bars. The village has a wonderful atmosphere, particularly in the evenings when the restaurants fill up and the lights reflect on the water.
The Friday Walking Street market in the Fisherman's Village is the best market on Koh Samui — a lively night market with excellent street food, handicrafts, clothing, jewellery and souvenirs. The market runs every Friday evening from around 5pm and is one of the most enjoyable experiences on the island. The atmosphere is excellent.
Bophut has the finest restaurant scene on Koh Samui — a concentration of excellent restaurants in the Fisherman's Village serving Thai, seafood, French, Italian and international cuisine. The Karma Sutra, Zazen and the Shack are among the finest. The quality is significantly higher than Chaweng and the atmosphere is far more romantic.
Bophut has the finest boutique hotels on Koh Samui — the Zazen, the Samui Buri Beach Resort and the Lodge are all exceptional. The hotels are smaller and more intimate than the large resorts at Chaweng, with excellent service and beautiful design. The area is the best choice for couples seeking a romantic, sophisticated holiday.
Bophut Beach is a calm, quiet beach on the north coast — less spectacular than Chaweng but excellent for swimming and very peaceful. The beach is lined with fishing boats and has a genuinely local atmosphere. The water is calm and clear and the beach is rarely crowded.
The Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) is just 2km from Bophut — a 12-metre golden Buddha statue on a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway, one of the most visited temples on Koh Samui. The temple is free to visit (modest dress required) and the views from the causeway are excellent.
Boat trips to Ang Thong Marine Park, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan (for the Full Moon Party) depart from the north coast piers near Bophut. The Full Moon Party ferry from Bophut pier is the most convenient departure point for visitors staying in the north of the island.
Bophut has the most sophisticated and romantic atmosphere on Koh Samui — a world away from the bustle of Chaweng. The evenings in the Fisherman's Village are magical, with excellent restaurants, gentle music and a relaxed, cosmopolitan crowd. It is the best area for couples and discerning travellers.
