The Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks are the most famous attraction. Muay Thai training and shows are excellent. The restaurant scene is more authentically Thai than Chaweng.

Lamai Beach is a beautiful 4km stretch of white sand with calm, clear water excellent for swimming. The beach is less crowded than Chaweng and has a more relaxed atmosphere. The northern end of the beach is the most beautiful and quietest; the central section has beach bars and water sports; the southern end is the most local in character.
The Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks (Hin Ta and Hin Yai) are the most famous natural attraction on Koh Samui — a pair of naturally eroded rock formations at the southern end of Lamai Beach that resemble male and female genitalia. They are a major tourist attraction and a source of great amusement. The surrounding area has good restaurants and souvenir shops.
Lamai has the best Muay Thai boxing scene on Koh Samui — several gyms offer training sessions for visitors and there are regular evening boxing shows. The Lamai Muay Thai gym is one of the most respected on the island. Watching a live Muay Thai bout is one of the most authentic Thai cultural experiences available.
Lamai offers the best value accommodation on Koh Samui — a wide range of resorts, boutique hotels and guesthouses at prices significantly lower than Chaweng. The Pavilion Samui, Rocky's Resort and the Lamai Wanta are among the finest. The value for money is excellent and the quality is high.
Lamai has an excellent restaurant scene with a more local Thai character than Chaweng — authentic Thai restaurants, fresh seafood grills on the beach and good international options. The night market on the main road is excellent for street food. The beachfront restaurants at the northern end of the beach are the most atmospheric.
Wat Khunaram, just inland from Lamai, is one of the most visited temples on Koh Samui — famous for the mummified monk Luang Pho Daeng, preserved in a glass case in the main shrine. The temple is a fascinating insight into Thai Buddhist culture and is free to visit. Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) is required.
Lamai has good water sports facilities — jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling are available from the beach. Boat trips to Ang Thong Marine Park and Koh Tao depart from nearby piers. The conditions are excellent from December to April.
Lamai has a modest but enjoyable nightlife — a strip of bars and live music venues along the main road that is lively but far less intense than Chaweng. It is the best choice for visitors who want some evening entertainment without the full party atmosphere of Chaweng.
