Nang Thong Beach is the original and most established beach in Khao Lak — a long, beautiful stretch of golden sand with calm, warm water and a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. The beach is backed by casuarina trees and low-rise resorts rather than large hotel complexes, giving it a more natural and characterful feel than the newer resort beaches to the north. The beach faces west and has excellent sunset views.
The Khao Lak Merlin Resort is the most established and well-known hotel on Nang Thong Beach — a large, well-run resort with 270 rooms, multiple pools, an excellent spa, several restaurants and direct beach access. The resort has been operating for over 20 years and has a loyal following among repeat visitors to Khao Lak. It is the best value large resort on the beach and is popular with Travelpack and JTA Holidays guests.
Nang Thong has the most characterful and established local scene in Khao Lak — the beach road has a good selection of local Thai restaurants, dive shops, massage parlours, souvenir shops and convenience stores that have developed organically over many years. The atmosphere is more relaxed and genuine than the newer resort areas to the north and the beach has a strong community of long-term expats and repeat visitors.
Nang Thong has the best selection of local restaurants in Khao Lak — a mix of excellent Thai restaurants, seafood barbecues and international cafes along the beach road serving fresh food at very reasonable prices. The Khao Lak Seafood restaurant and the Takieng restaurant are among the most popular. The restaurants are significantly more affordable than the resort restaurants and are a pleasant evening option for hotel guests.
Nang Thong has an excellent selection of dive centres — several well-established operators offer day trips to the Similan Islands, the Surin Islands and the local dive sites around Khao Lak. The Khao Lak Explorer and the Sea Dragon Dive Centre are among the most reputable. Liveaboard diving trips to the Similans and the Burma Banks also depart from Nang Thong during the season (November to April).
The Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park begins at the southern end of Nang Thong Beach — the park boundary is literally at the edge of the beach, making Nang Thong the best base for exploring the national park. The park has excellent hiking trails through jungle and mangroves, waterfalls, wildlife (hornbills, gibbons, monitor lizards) and a beautiful rocky coastline. The park visitor centre is a short walk from the beach.
The Tsunami Memorial at Nang Thong is one of the most moving and historically significant sites in Thailand — a memorial to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which devastated Khao Lak more than any other resort in Thailand. The memorial includes a police patrol boat (Police Boat 813) that was carried 2km inland by the wave and left in place as a permanent memorial. It is a sobering and important site.
Nang Thong is 75km north of Phuket Airport — approximately 1.5 hours by taxi or minibus. The beach road has a good selection of shops, restaurants, dive centres and ATMs. Motorbike hire is available from several shops on the beach road. November to April is the best time to visit. The beach is pleasant year-round but the Similan Islands are closed from May to October.
