Bang Niang Beach is the longest and most complete beach in Khao Lak — a wide, gently shelving stretch of golden sand with calm, warm water and a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. The beach faces west and has excellent sunset views. The northern end of the beach is the most sheltered and the most popular with resort guests. The beach is significantly less crowded than the beaches of Phuket and retains a genuinely peaceful character.
The JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa is the finest luxury hotel in Khao Lak — a magnificent beachfront resort with 275 rooms and suites, multiple pools, an extraordinary spa, five restaurants and direct beach access. The resort is set in extensive tropical gardens and has a genuinely grand and elegant atmosphere. The beachfront pool is one of the finest in Thailand. The resort is the best choice for luxury travellers in Khao Lak.
The Cher Resort is the most stylish boutique option on Bang Niang Beach — a beautifully designed contemporary resort with 60 rooms and pool villas, a beachfront infinity pool, an excellent restaurant and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere. The resort is the best mid-range to upper-mid-range option on the beach and is popular with couples and design-conscious travellers seeking an alternative to the large resort hotels.
Bang Niang Beach is the best base in Khao Lak for day trips to the Similan Islands — the most famous dive and snorkelling destination in Thailand. Speedboat day trips from Bang Niang take approximately 1.5 hours to the Similans and are operated by several dive centres on the beach road. The Similan Islands have some of the finest coral reefs and underwater visibility in Southeast Asia. Liveaboard diving trips also depart from Bang Niang.
Bang Niang has the best selection of dive centres in Khao Lak — several excellent operators on the beach road offer day trips to the Similan Islands, the Surin Islands and the local dive sites around Khao Lak. The diving season runs from November to April (the Similan Islands National Park is closed from May to October). The snorkelling on the day trips to the Similans is extraordinary, with excellent visibility and abundant marine life.
Bang Niang has the best restaurant and nightlife scene in Khao Lak — a string of excellent beachfront restaurants and beach bars along the beach road serving fresh Thai seafood, international food and cold drinks. The Bang Niang Night Market (open Tuesday, Friday and Sunday evenings) is the best street food market in the area. The nightlife is relaxed and low-key compared to Phuket — Khao Lak is not a party destination.
The Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park borders Bang Niang Beach to the south — a beautiful area of jungle, mangroves and rocky coastline with excellent hiking trails, waterfalls and wildlife (hornbills, gibbons, monitor lizards). The park is one of the most accessible national parks in Thailand and is a superb half-day excursion from Bang Niang. The Ton Chong Fa waterfall (8km from Bang Niang) is the most popular destination in the park.

November to April is the best time to visit — the sea is calm and the Similan Islands are open. The beach is pleasant year-round but the Similan Islands are closed from May to October.
