The Anjuna Wednesday Flea Market is the most famous market in India — a sprawling market with hundreds of vendors selling handicrafts, clothing, jewellery, spices and antiques. The market has been running since the 1970s and is a Goa institution. The atmosphere is extraordinary — a mix of local vendors, tourists and the remnants of the original hippie community.
Chapora Fort, on the headland above Vagator, is the most atmospheric historical site in North Goa — a ruined Portuguese fort with extraordinary views of the Chapora River, the Arabian Sea and the surrounding coastline. The fort was made famous by the Bollywood film Dil Chahta Hai and is one of the most photographed viewpoints in Goa.
Vagator has the finest cliff-top bars in Goa — Hilltop, Disco Valley and the legendary Nine Bar (now closed but replaced by several successors) offer extraordinary views of the Arabian Sea from the cliffs above the beach. The sunset from the Vagator cliffs is one of the most spectacular in Goa.
Anjuna and Vagator are the birthplace of Goa trance — a genre of electronic music that originated in the Goa party scene in the 1980s and 1990s. The trance music scene is still active, with parties at Hilltop and other venues attracting electronic music fans from across the world.
Little Vagator (Ozran) beach is the most beautiful in the Vagator area — a small, sheltered cove with extraordinary red cliffs, calm water and a relaxed atmosphere. The beach is less crowded than Anjuna and has a more natural character. The snorkelling from the beach is good.
Curlies is the most famous beach shack in Goa — a legendary venue on Anjuna beach that has been the social hub of the Anjuna scene for decades. The shack serves excellent food and cold beer and is the best place to experience the authentic Anjuna atmosphere.
Anjuna and Vagator have an excellent selection of restaurants — from beach shacks serving fresh seafood to upmarket restaurants serving Goan, Indian and international cuisine. The food is excellent and very affordable. The local Goan cuisine — fish curry rice, prawn balchão, sorpotel — is extraordinary.
Boat trips from Anjuna to the offshore islands and dolphin watching excursions are available. The snorkelling at Grand Island (accessible by boat from Anjuna) is excellent. Dolphin watching trips are popular and sightings are common.
