Goa is India's most beloved beach destination — a former Portuguese colony on the Arabian Sea coast that has developed a culture entirely its own. The Indo-Portuguese heritage, the golden beaches, the legendary seafood and the laid-back atmosphere combine to create a destination that is unlike anywhere else in India.
Goa divides naturally into North and South, each with a distinct character. North Goa is livelier, more social and more developed — Baga, Calangute and Anjuna have a vibrant beach bar and nightlife scene, excellent seafood shacks and a wide range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to boutique hotels. The Saturday Night Market at Arpora is one of the best markets in India. Anjuna's flea market, held every Wednesday, is a Goa institution.
South Goa is quieter, more secluded and more luxurious. Palolem is one of the most beautiful beaches in India — a perfect crescent of golden sand with calm, clear water. Agonda is even more secluded. The Leela, Park Hyatt and Taj Exotica are all exceptional luxury properties with private beaches and outstanding facilities.
Old Goa, the former Portuguese capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, which contains the remains of St Francis Xavier, and the Se Cathedral are among the finest examples of Portuguese colonial architecture in Asia. The Goa State Museum and the Latin Quarter of Fontainhas in Panaji are also worth visiting.
The food is outstanding. Goa's cuisine is a unique blend of Indian and Portuguese influences — fish curry rice, prawn balchao, vindaloo, bebinca and feni (the local cashew spirit) are all essential. The beach shacks serving fresh catch of the day are a Goa institution.
The best time to visit is November to March — dry, warm and perfect for the beach. The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain but also lush green landscapes and dramatically reduced prices.
