The Valley of the Kings is the most extraordinary burial ground in the world — a remote desert valley on the West Bank of the Nile where 63 royal tombs were cut into the limestone cliffs during the New Kingdom (1550–1070 BC). The tombs of Tutankhamun, Ramesses II, Seti I and Ramesses VI are among the most spectacular. The painted walls and hieroglyphs are extraordinarily well preserved.
Karnak Temple is the largest ancient religious complex ever built — a vast temple city covering 100 hectares, built and expanded by successive pharaohs over 2,000 years. The Great Hypostyle Hall (134 massive columns, each 23 metres high) is one of the most overwhelming architectural spaces in the world. The Sacred Lake and the Avenue of Sphinxes are equally impressive.
Luxor Temple is the most beautifully situated ancient monument in Egypt — a magnificent New Kingdom temple on the east bank of the Nile, illuminated at night and reflected in the river. The temple was built by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II and is connected to Karnak by the 3km Avenue of Sphinxes. The temple is in the heart of modern Luxor and is accessible on foot from the hotels.
The Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari) is the most dramatically situated temple in Egypt — a three-tiered mortuary temple built into the cliffs of the West Bank by Egypt's most famous female pharaoh. The temple is one of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian architecture and the setting against the sheer limestone cliffs is extraordinary. The painted reliefs inside are remarkably well preserved.
A hot air balloon flight over the West Bank of Luxor at sunrise is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences in the world — floating silently over the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Nile as the sun rises over the desert. Balloon flights depart before dawn and last approximately 1 hour. They are available from all hotels and are highly recommended.
A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is one of the great travel experiences — a 3–7 night journey by traditional dahabiya or modern cruise ship along the most historic stretch of the Nile, stopping at the temples of Edfu, Kom Ombo and Esna. The cruise passes through extraordinary desert landscapes and the temples are seen at their most atmospheric from the river.
The West Bank of Luxor has an extraordinary concentration of tombs and temples beyond the Valley of the Kings — the Valley of the Queens (including the tomb of Nefertari, the most beautifully decorated tomb in Egypt), the Tombs of the Nobles (with vivid scenes of everyday life), the Workers' Village of Deir el-Medina and the Ramesseum (mortuary temple of Ramesses II).
Luxor is best visited in the cooler months (October to April) — summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Allow at least 3 days to see the main sites. The West Bank sites (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon) are best visited in the morning. The East Bank temples (Karnak, Luxor) are best in the late afternoon and evening when illuminated. The Luxor Pass covers all sites.
