Egypt is one of the world's most extraordinary holiday destinations — a country where ancient history, natural beauty and beach resort holidays combine in a way that is unique on earth. Nowhere else can you dive world-class coral reefs in the morning, visit a 3,000-year-old temple in the afternoon and watch the sun set over the Nile in the evening.
The Pyramids of Giza are the defining image of Egypt and they do not disappoint. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World — 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tonnes, assembled with a precision that still baffles engineers today. The Sphinx, carved from a single limestone outcrop, guards the plateau with an inscrutable expression that has fascinated visitors for millennia.
Luxor is the world's greatest open-air museum. The East Bank has the temples of Karnak and Luxor — vast complexes of columns, obelisks and hieroglyphics that were the religious heart of ancient Egypt. The West Bank has the Valley of the Kings, where over 60 royal tombs have been carved into the limestone cliffs, and the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, one of the most dramatic buildings in Egypt.
The Red Sea coast is Egypt's other great attraction. Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are both well-developed beach resort destinations with excellent all-inclusive hotels, good beaches and direct access to some of the world's finest coral reefs. The SS Thistlegorm, a WWII supply ship sunk in 1941, is one of the world's top wreck dives. Ras Mohammed National Park, at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, has extraordinary coral walls and abundant marine life.
Egypt is one of the most affordable long-haul destinations for British tourists. Flights from the UK take just 4–5 hours, making it accessible for shorter breaks as well as longer holidays. The best time to visit is October to April, when temperatures are warm but not extreme.
