Ao Nang Beach is a wide, pleasant bay backed by dramatic limestone karst cliffs — one of the most visually striking beach settings in Thailand. The beach is lined with sun loungers, beach bars and longtail boats. The swimming is good from November to April. The beach is the departure point for longtail boats to Railay Beach (15 minutes) and the Four Islands.
The longtail boats from Ao Nang beachfront to Railay Beach run throughout the day and take approximately 15 minutes — one of the most scenic short boat journeys in Thailand, passing dramatic limestone cliffs rising from the sea. Railay is inaccessible by road and can only be reached by boat, making the longtail journey part of the experience.
The Four Islands day trip is the most popular excursion from Ao Nang — a full-day boat trip visiting Chicken Island, Tup Island, Poda Island and Koh Mor, with excellent snorkelling, swimming and beach time at each stop. The islands have beautiful white sand beaches and clear water. The trip is one of the finest day excursions in Krabi.
Ao Nang and the surrounding Krabi area have some of the finest rock climbing in the world — the dramatic limestone karst cliffs offer hundreds of routes from beginner to expert. Railay Beach is the most famous climbing area, but the cliffs around Ao Nang are also excellent. Several climbing schools in the town offer guided sessions for all abilities.
Sea kayaking around the limestone karst islands and through sea caves is one of the finest experiences in Krabi — several operators in Ao Nang offer guided kayaking tours through the mangroves, sea caves and hidden lagoons of the surrounding area. The Hong Island kayaking tour (through a hidden lagoon inside a limestone island) is particularly spectacular.
Ao Nang has the widest choice of restaurants in Krabi — Thai, seafood, Indian, Italian and international cuisine is available throughout the resort. The beachfront restaurants are excellent for fresh seafood. The night market on the main strip is the best place for authentic Thai street food. The quality ranges from budget to fine dining.
Ao Nang has the best shopping and nightlife in Krabi — souvenir shops, clothing stalls, tour operators and bars line the main beach road. The nightlife is relaxed and pleasant — a handful of beach bars and live music venues create a lively but not overwhelming atmosphere. For serious nightlife, Patong in Phuket is 2 hours away.
Ao Nang has the widest range of accommodation in Krabi — from budget guesthouses to five-star resorts. The Centara Grand Beach Resort, the Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort and the Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra are among the finest. our travel partners have excellent packages to Ao Nang at all budget levels.
