Khor Fakkan has the most beautiful and dramatic natural setting of any town in the UAE — a perfect crescent bay enclosed on three sides by the grey limestone peaks of the Hajar Mountains, with the Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon to the east. The view from the corniche looking back at the mountains is extraordinary and unlike anything else in the Emirates. The bay is one of the most naturally beautiful in the Gulf and is the finest setting for a beach holiday in the UAE.
Khor Fakkan has excellent diving and snorkelling — the rocky headlands and reefs around the bay have good coral and a diverse marine life, with reef fish, rays, sea turtles and occasional reef sharks. The best dive sites are around the rocky points at the northern end of the bay and around Shark Island (a short boat ride from the beach). Several dive centres in Khor Fakkan offer guided dives and PADI courses. The snorkelling from the beach is good and accessible to beginners.
The Khor Fakkan Fort is the most historically significant building in the town — a beautifully restored Portuguese fortification dating from the 16th century, when the Portuguese controlled the Indian Ocean trade routes and built a series of forts along the Gulf of Oman coast. The fort has been carefully restored and is open to visitors. The views from the fort over the bay and the mountains are extraordinary. The fort is the finest example of Portuguese colonial architecture in the UAE.
The Khor Fakkan Corniche is the most beautiful waterfront promenade in Fujairah — a pleasant, landscaped walkway along the bay with excellent views of the mountains and the Indian Ocean. The public beach along the corniche is clean and well-maintained, with calm, warm water and good facilities. The beach is significantly less crowded than the Dubai beaches and has a relaxed, local atmosphere. The corniche is best walked in the early morning or evening.
The Radisson Blu Resort Fujairah is the finest hotel in the Khor Fakkan area — a beautiful beachfront resort with 320 rooms and suites, a private beach, multiple pools, an excellent spa, several restaurants and a dive centre. The resort is set directly on the beach with extraordinary views of the bay and the mountains. It is the best choice for visitors who want a comfortable, well-facilitated beach holiday in the Khor Fakkan area.
The Hajar Mountains provide an extraordinary backdrop to Khor Fakkan — the grey limestone peaks rise steeply from the coastal plain to over 1,500 metres, creating a dramatic and beautiful setting for the town and the bay. The mountain road from Khor Fakkan to Fujairah City (through the Hajar range) is one of the most scenic drives in the UAE, with dramatic gorges, traditional mountain villages and extraordinary views. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes.
The Khor Fakkan Corniche Park is the most pleasant public park in Fujairah — a beautifully landscaped park along the corniche with a large artificial waterfall, children's play areas, walking paths and excellent views of the bay. The park is the most popular evening destination for local families in Khor Fakkan and is the finest public park in the UAE outside of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The waterfall is illuminated at night and is a popular photo spot.
Khor Fakkan is 1.5 hours from Dubai by car — the drive through the Hajar Mountains via the Masafi road is beautiful. A car is essential. Khor Fakkan is technically part of Sharjah emirate (an exclave on the Indian Ocean coast) and alcohol is not served in the town. October to April is the best time to visit. The dive centres should be booked in advance during the peak season. The corniche is best visited in the evening when the mountain light is beautiful.
