Top 8 Things To Do in Fujairah City

The oldest fort in the UAE, the oldest mosque in the Gulf, the National Museum and the dramatic Hajar Mountain backdrop that make Fujairah City the most historically rich destination in the Emirates.

01

Fujairah Fort

Fujairah Fort is the oldest fort in the UAE — a magnificent mud-brick fortification dating from the 16th century, set on a rocky outcrop above the old town with extraordinary views of the Hajar Mountains and the Indian Ocean coast. The fort was the seat of the ruling Al Sharqi family for centuries and was the site of several significant battles in Fujairah's history. The fort has been carefully restored and is open to visitors. The views from the fort over the city and the mountains are extraordinary.

02

Al Bidyah Mosque

Al Bidyah Mosque is the oldest mosque in the UAE and one of the most important ancient religious buildings in the Gulf — a beautiful mud-brick mosque dating from the 15th century (some sources suggest earlier), with four distinctive domes and a simple, austere interior that is extraordinarily atmospheric. The mosque is still in active use and is open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times. It is located 35km north of Fujairah City on the coast road and is an essential visit. The setting against the Hajar Mountains is extraordinary.

03

Fujairah National Museum

The Fujairah National Museum is the finest museum in the emirate — a well-curated collection of archaeological finds from the Fujairah region (including Bronze Age and Iron Age artefacts from the Hajar Mountains), traditional Emirati crafts, weapons, jewellery, maritime artefacts and a fascinating history of the pearl diving and trading culture of the Indian Ocean coast. The museum is housed in a traditional building adjacent to Fujairah Fort and is an essential complement to a visit to the fort.

04

Heritage Village

The Fujairah Heritage Village is a beautifully reconstructed traditional Emirati village adjacent to the fort — a collection of traditional mud-brick houses, a falconry display, traditional craft demonstrations and an excellent collection of traditional Emirati artefacts. The heritage village gives an excellent sense of traditional Emirati life before the oil era and is the most atmospheric heritage attraction in Fujairah. The falconry demonstrations are particularly impressive.

05

Fujairah Corniche

The Fujairah Corniche is the most pleasant waterfront promenade in the city — a landscaped walkway along the Indian Ocean coast with good views of the sea and the Hajar Mountains. The public beach along the corniche is clean and well-maintained, with calm, warm water and good facilities. The corniche is the most popular evening destination for local families in Fujairah City and is the best place to experience authentic Emirati daily life.

06

Fujairah City Centre Mall

Fujairah City Centre is the main shopping mall in the emirate — a pleasant, well-stocked mall with a good selection of international brands, a hypermarket, a cinema multiplex and an excellent food court. The mall is significantly less crowded than the Dubai malls and has a more relaxed atmosphere. It is the most convenient shopping destination for visitors staying in Fujairah City.

07

Local Restaurants

Fujairah City has an excellent and authentic local restaurant scene — a mix of Emirati restaurants (serving machboos, harees and traditional Emirati dishes), Indian curry houses, Iranian grills and local cafes. The seafood restaurants along the corniche serve the freshest fish in the UAE at very reasonable prices. The local restaurants are significantly more authentic and affordable than anything in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

08

Practical Tips

Fujairah City is 1.5 hours from Dubai by car — the drive through the Hajar Mountains via the Masafi road is beautiful. A car is essential. October to April is the best time to visit. The National Museum is closed on Tuesdays. Al Bidyah Mosque is 35km north of the city on the coast road — allow 1.5 hours for the visit including the drive. The fort and museum are best visited in the morning before the heat of the day.
